Obituary for John Drummond Freese

BANGOR - John D. Freese, 89, husband for 64 years to the late Mary-Jane (Bates) Freese, died April 10, 2014, after a long illness with Alzheimer's disease. He was born April 22, 1924, in Bangor, son of Paul W. and Esther (Atwood) Freese.

He graduated from Maine Central Institute, served in the U.S. Army and graduated from Middlebury College, in 1949. After that he began working at Freese's Department Store, a family business, which was started in 1892 by Langdon Freese. John worked his way from shoe salesman to general manager.

He was a member for over 50 years of the Penobscot Valley Country Club, and a member of the Rotary Club of Bangor. John volunteered for many years at SCORE, helping young entrepreneurs.

John was a devoted husband, father, grandfather and great-grandfather; and his love, loyalty and support were very much appreciated by his family.

Surviving are four children, Martha Shattuck and her husband, Tom, of Waterville, Betsy Mackie and her husband, John, of Orrington, Andrew Freese and his wife, Rosemary, of Veazie and Amy Estabrook and her husband, Tim, of Orono; grandchildren, Jennifer Freese and her husband, Rafal Subernat, of Hermon, Jillian Chandler and her husband, Case, of Veazie, Jeffrey Shattuck and his wife, Sarah, of Boston, Beth Shattuck of Washington, Julie Hovencamp and her husband, David, of Milford, Michelle Goody and her husband, Brad, of Orono and Laura Tardiff and her husband, Michael, of MI; great-grandchildren, Lily and Wyatt Chandler, Sierra Goody, and Max and Maya Subernat.

Relatives and friends are invited to call 6-8 P.M. Monday, April 14, 2014, at Brookings-Smith, 133 Center St., Bangor, where funeral services will be held 11 A.M. Tuesday April 15, 2014, with the Rev. Dr. James L. Haddix, pastor and teacher, of All Souls Congregational Church, officiating. The family invites relatives and friends to share conversation and refreshments at the Family Reception Center of Brookings-Smith, 163 Center St., Bangor, immediately following the service. Following the reception, committal services for Mary-Jane and John will be at Mt. Hope Cemetery, Bangor. Gifts in his memory may be made to Alzheimer's Association, Maine Chapter, 383 US Rt.
