Obituary for Louise Emily Briggs

BANGOR - Louise Emily Whitney Briggs, age 89, died on April 11, 2014 at Winterberry Heights Memory Care in Bangor. Louise was surrounded by her husband and four children. From her birth to her passing on Louise touched countless lives in her lifetime with her unselfish acts of kindness, endless love. She will be forever remembered by all those who were blessed to have known her. She had a smile that would light up the room and would set you at ease the moment you spoke with her. She was born on August 20, 1924, in Lincoln, ME to Harry and Della (Brown) Whitney. Louise grew up in Lincoln and was a tremendous help to her family’s business (Whitney Energy) during WWII.

On September 20, 1947, she married Allison Joseph Briggs. Together, they had 4 children: 3 sons and one daughter. They re-located to Brewer, Maine to raise a family. Louise and Allison enjoyed traveling to other countries as well as the many memorable family and friends picnics in Maine for which Louise was known for delicious desserts, her irresistible, unmistakable cookies and sandwiches and her genuine warm embrace sweets, sandwiches and Jungle Juice.

Louise was devoted to her family. She was very supportive of her children’s activities over the years and held active roles: Boy Scout and Girl Scout Den Leader, Rainbow Girls. Louise served on numerous Committees at All Souls Congregational Church; Nominating Committee 1967; Coordinating Committee 1971,1978,1986, 1987,1990, 1991 and 1996; Chancel Guild 1975; Holiday Bazaar and Gardeners for many years, and helped out with many mass mailings. Louise was quite humbled in April 2006 when she and her husband Allison received The Mandatum Dignitatis Recognition Award for service to Church and Community.

Louise’s special interests included tennis and bridge with her husband Allison and spending quality time with friends. Her delight came though when she was able to see her grandchildren and great-grandchildren excel at their activities; from orchestra to football, baseball, cheerleading & swimming; their triumphs were her cherished moments.

Left to honor Louise and remember her love and hugs as a wife, mother and grandmother and great grandmother are: her beloved husband of 66 years, Allison, son Daryl (Pam) Briggs of Brewer, daughter Gayle (Joseph Sukaskas) Briggs of Portland, son Bryan (Debbie Walls) Briggs of Cumberland, ME, and son Gary (Tammy Ruuk) Briggs of Brewer. Eight grandchildren: Erik (Rena) Briggs, Arlington MA, Nathan (Molly) Briggs, Hampden, ME, Wilson, Brandon & Alyson Briggs of Brewer; Zachary, Alexander & Catherine Briggs of Cumberland, ME. Two great-grandchildren: Addison Briggs, Hampden ME and Makenzie Briggs, Arlington MA and many nieces and nephews. Louise was pre-deceased by her parents, her brothers Eugene and Roland and her sister Ruth.

A celebration of Louise’s life will be held 11am Wednesday, April 16, 2014 at All Souls Congregational Church, 10 Broadway, Bangor, with the Rev. Dr. James L. Haddix, pastor and teacher and Rev. Renee U. Garrett/M. Div., Minister of Christian Nurture, officiating. The Family will greet friends at the Church following the service. Interment will be in Mount Hope Cemetery, Bangor.
The Family of Louise would like to extend gratitude to all the staff at Winterberry Heights, Loving Touch, Beacon Hospice, Dr. Penny Lamhut, Dr. Angel Merchant and All Souls Church for their compassion and attentiveness during this time.
