Obituary for Vinal H. Lobley

Brunswick and Bangor – Vinal H. Lobley, 95, died July 23, 2014 with his family by his side. He was born in West Enfield, Maine, April 9, 1919 the son of Joseph and Althea (Cassio) Lobley. Vinal was a graduate of Bangor High School in 1937. He was well known in the aviation field in Maine. Vinal took his first flying lesson at the age of 14 from Dan Mason, a family friend. He was a member of the Maine Pilots Association and a charter member of the Maine Civil Air Patrol. His early years in aviation began in 1939 when he began working for Airways, Inc. in Waterville, Maine. Vinal then went to work for Northeast Airlines of East Boston, MA. After leaving Northeast Airlines, he became one of the youngest aircraft inspectors for the U.S Government. Vinal was licensed as a land and seaplane pilot. After leaving government service he went to work for the Bangor Daily News where he retired after 32 years on January 28, 1983. Vinal and his wife enjoyed wintering in Florida. An avid golfer, he served as an advisory member of the Bangor Parks and Recreation Department for several years. Vinal was also a loyal fan to the Maine Black Bear’s women’s and men’s basketball teams. He was predeceased by his loving wife Mary Frances (Dugan) Lobley; one granddaughter, Mary Katherine McKinney, and a brother, Robert B. Lobley of Bradley. Vinal is survived by one son David W. Lobley and his wife Patricia of Westbrook, Maine; a daughter Jane E. McKinney and her husband Thomas H. of Brunswick; four grandchildren, Jennifer E. Lobley of Providence, R.I.; Christopher D. Lobley and his wife Summer of Unity, Maine; Amanda F. Worcestor and her husband Brad of Lewiston, and Sarah J. McKinney and her fiancé Russ Arrigoni of Middletown, CT; four great grandchildren, Dylan and Andrew Lobley of Unity, Maine, and Juliet and Maddox Worcester of Lewiston, Maine. Also, several nieces, nephews, and cousins including a special cousin, Joseph Gould of Holden, Maine. Those who wish to remember Vinal in a special way may make gifts in his memory to the American Diabetes Association 10 Speen Street, 2nd Floor Framingham, MA 01701 or the March of Dimes Maine Chapter 136 US Route One, Scarborough, Maine 04074. A memorial service will be held 1:00pm August 1, 2014 at Brookings-Smith 133 Center St., Bangor. Friends may call from 12noon until time of service. Relatives and friends are invited to share conversation and refreshments at the Family Reception Center of Brookings-Smith 163 Center St., Bangor immediately following the service.
