Obituary for Betty Jean O'Brien

Betty Jean O'Brien
BANGOR - Betty J. O’Brien, 83, died on Monday, November 17, 2014 surrounded by her family. She was born in Lincoln on May 11, 1931, the daughter of Forrest & Ruth Ellen Mulheron.

A few years after Betty graduated from Bangor High School Class of 1949, she met the love of her life, Clifford “Kip” L. O’Brien, Sr., while he was stationed at Dow Air Force Base. Like many military wives, Betty supported her husband’s twenty year career and solely raised their children during those times he served our country while stationed overseas. An avid seamstress and frugal, she made most of her kids clothes. They lived in Maryland for five years while Kip was stationed at Andrews Air Force Base.

In 1971, they returned back to Bangor, where Betty managed the Beaconway fabric store. She later finished her career as a fabricator for the very popular My Maine Bag.

Betty was a loving wife, mother and ‘Anna’ to her grandchildren - dedicated to her family, friends and dog. She was witty, full of life, an amazing storyteller and her smile warmed the room. She always put others needs above her own, donated to every cause mailed her way and she certainly enjoyed knitting for everyone - especially the hats for the neonatal unit at Eastern Maine Medical Center. She loved entertaining, attending to her beautiful flower gardens and enjoyed the Maine countryside.

Betty was predeceased by her beloved husband, Clifford “Kip” L. O’Brien, Sr. and her brother Forrest Mulheron, Jr. She is survived by her brother, Richard Milheron and his wife Madelyn Milheron of Brewer; her two children, son Clifford “Kip” L. O’Brien, Jr. and his wife Corenna L. O’Brien of Orrington and her daughter Patti Harris and her husband Jon Harris of Carolina Shores, N.C. She was blessed with two grandchildren; Christopher Harris of New York City and Meaghan Harris of Washington D.C.

Relatives and friends are welcome to call 6 to 8PM, Thursday, November 20 at Brookings-Smith, 133 Center St., Bangor, where a funeral service will be held at 1 p.m. on Friday, November 21. Interment will be at Pine Grove Cemetery, Bangor. The family invites relatives and friends to join them in great conversation, food and beverages at Jeff’s Catering, 15 Littlefield Road in Brewer on November 21, from 3:30 p.m. to 6:00 p.m. Condolences to the family may be expressed at www.BrookingsSmith.com.
