Obituary for Raylan L. Brasslett

GLENBURN - Raylan L. Brasslett, 68, passed away suddenly at his home on his Father's birthday, February 28, 2015 after undergoing heart surgery on Feb. 11, 2015. He was born in Milo, Maine on May 7, 1946, the son of Legorie and Helen (Arnold) Brasslett. He grew up in Glenburn and graduated from East Corinth Academy in 1964. In 1965, he joined the Army National Guard and served 6 yrs, stationed in Fort Bliss and Fort Hood, Texas. Upon returning he went to work for Viner Shoe Co. as a quality-control inspector, and was then relocated to Presque Isle, ME where he worked for Aroostook Shoe from 1967-68. On August 26, 1967 he married his high school sweetheart, Ruthena Bean and they lived in Presque Isle. He then returned to Viner Shoe Co. for another few years. At this time, they settled on a lot on Pushaw Rd next to his parents. In the late 70's, he worked for American Felt Slipper in Brewer as Plant Manager with 300 employees. In 1980 he worked for Spot-Bilt as Factory Superintendent, at which time he spent 4 weeks in Taiwan overseeing sneaker production. In 1985 he went to work for Ansewn Shoe as Factory Superintendent until the factory closed in 1993. He then took a job with Penobscot Shoe as Plant Manager, where he traveled for couple of weeks a month to Brazil, where his wife was able to travel with him for two weeks enjoying the country. In 2003, he changed employment fields and got a job at Marden's as an Assistant Manager, shortly afterwards he was promoted to Manager until his retirement in 2011. He helped form the Pushaw Lake Snowmobile Club and was President for several years helping build the clubhouse in Hudson. He was a member of the Maine Snowmobile Assoc. and the Glenburn Recreation for several years, getting the baseball fields built at the Glenburn School. In 1975, he and his wife built their first home together. Along with their friends Malcolm and Norma Cushing of Glenburn, they built Homestead Estates in 1984. A 50-unit mobile home park in Glenburn which they owned for 28 years. In 1995, they took on another project and built a camp in Pembroke on Cobscook Bay. This was when Raylan bought a lobster boat and became a lobsterman, which he enjoyed tremendously along with his wife who was his helping hand. Over the years he and his wife danced at every opportunity. He participated in all kinds of sports; snowmobiling, ATVs, hunting, fishing, scuba diving, camping, motorcycling and working with his tractors. He enjoyed both an elk and caribou hunt with his best buddy, Keith Dunfee of Bradford. A highlight was when he won a Harley Davidson, Fatboy motorcycle. He loved his Harleys and biking with his wife and longtime friends, John and Joannie Killinger of Glenburn. He and his wife were able to travel on 2 cruises, and to Aruba annually for the last 9 years. This was Raylan's favorite spot and they were scheduled to leave on April 4th. He was a kind, considerate, passionate, hardworking man and loved by everybody. His family always came first and his grandchildren were all very special to him. His daily routine was going next door to have coffee with his mother. He is survived by his wife, Ruthena of 48 years; his mother Helen; 3 children, Kurt of Glenburn, Todd and Michelle of Glenburn and his daughter Rayette and husband Aaron Thompson of Gilbert, AZ; his brothers, Anthony of Glenburn and Gordon and Patty Clement of Glenburn; his grandchildren, Katrina (Brasslett) and husband Nate Newcomb and 2 great-granddaughters, Calli and Brooklyn of Kansas; Jagger and Cohen Thompson of AZ, and Devyn and Austin Brasslett of Glenburn; step grandchildren, Brianna Jones and her daughter Aria of OH, Ben and Morgan Beal and her daughter Aryanna of Glenburn; in-laws, Carlah and Wayne Bishop of Kenduskeag, Lester (Bud) Bean Jr, Rodney and Deanna Bean all of Bangor, Robert and Dotty Bean of Newport, Myrna and Adolph Martin of Turner, Joanna Galkowski of Rockland, and Verna and Peter Hussey of Winslow; his Uncle Earland and Janette Arnold of Charleston, Aunts Hilda Chase, Glenda Brackett and Marice Arnold of Bradford; several cousins, nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his father in 1980, his sister Judy Pierce on Sept 14, 2014; his in-laws Lester Bean on Aug 7, 2014 and Roberta Bean on Dec 25, 2014. Relatives and friends are invited to call from 2-4pm and 6-8pm, Wednesday March 4, 2015 at Brookings-Smith 133 Center St., Bangor where funeral services will be held 1:00pm Thursday March 5, 2015 with the Rev. Garnett Chute, Pastor, Hermon Baptist Church, officiating. The family invites all to share conversation and refreshments at the Family Reception Center of Brookings-Smith 159 Center St., Bangor immediately following the service. Spring interment with Military Honors, is tentatively set for his birthday on May 7, 2015 at the Lakeview Cemetery, Glenburn.
