Obituary for Rhonda Lee Young (Morrison)

Rhonda Lee Young (Morrison)
HOLDEN – Rhonda Lee (Morrison) Young passed away at home July 8, 2015 with dear friends and family at her bedside. She fought her battle with cancer with courage, grace and dignity. She was born in Millinocket, the daughter of Erwin “Bud” Somers and Donna (Morrison) Somers on February 5, 1958.

Rhonda grew up in Bangor and graduated from Bangor High School in 1976. After graduation, she went to work with her mom at Brewer Convalescent Home for 10 years where she and her mom became as much good friends as they were mother and daughter. She then attended Husson College, earning her Associate’s Degree and soon after was employed by Neurology Associates for the next 17 years as a Medical Transcriptionist. Rhonda’s bright eyes and big smile lit up this world in a very special way. She loved music, especially the Blues, attending the Rockland Blues Festival for many years. Rhonda spent the last few years of her life turning her and Larry’s new house at Brewer Lake into a home by decorating and landscaping with her keen eye for detail. Her favorite things at the lake were laying in the sun, camp fires, hand feeding her “little chippies”, four wheeler rides with her neighbors and great friends, Rob and Cindi Rossignol and the late Bob Blaiz and snuggling up beside the woodstove on cold winter nights. Rhonda was a proud member of the Elks Lodge #244 of Bangor, being awarded the honor of Elk of the Year in 2008 and 2009 mainly for her work as Chair Person of the Maine Children’s Cancer Program where, with the help of her team of girls, they raised $25,000.00 for that cause. She loved the quote: “You never stand as tall as when you stoop to help a child”.

Rhonda was predeceased by both her parents. She is survived by her husband and partner of thirty years; her loving brother, Thomas Hyatt Jr and nephew Thomas Hyatt III, both of Ocala, FL; brother, James Somers, his wife, Annita and their son, James Somers Jr, all of Sebring, FL; Uncle and Aunt Ed and Linda Wilkes of Levant; mother-in-law, Carolyn Young of Bangor; many cousins and a multitude of dear friends who all will miss her dearly. The family would like to thank all those who supported and comforted her in her final months, especially her cherished girlfriends, Karen and Pam Randall, Vicki Wade, Dawn Ayer, Karen Leeman and Brenda Greene. A special thank you too to all those who sent her special treats to try and keep her appetite up and provided her some enjoyment. Also appreciated was the support and love shown by all our neighbors down at the lake. Hats off to the caregivers at St. Joseph Hospital, St. Joseph Hospice Care, as well as the team at EMMC’s ICU and those at the Lafayette Cancer Center, angels in their own right, everyone of them. Rhonda’s memory will be cherished in the hearts of the many friends and relatives who were blessed by her presence here on this earth. "The truth ran deep within her eyes, the truth she spoke, and never lied.” Rest in Peace Little Girl.

A memorial service will be held 2pm Saturday, July 18, 2015 at Brookings-Smith, 133 Center Street, Bangor, with the Rev. Grace Bartlett officiating. Relatives and friends are welcome to call 12pm until time of service Saturday. Interment will be at Pine Grove Cemetery, Bangor. A celebration of Rhonda’s life will be held at Bangor Elks Lodge, 108 Odlin Road, Bangor following the services Saturday. Those who wish to remember Rhonda in a special way may make gifts in her memory to the Maine Children’s Cancer Program, C/O Bangor Elks Lodge, attn.: Patty Reed, 108 Odlin Road, Bangor, ME 04401.
