Obituary for Newell Thomas Fern

Newell Thomas Fern
Newell Thomas Fern Jr. of Clifton, (better known as Tom), at the age of almost 80 years, passed away June 27, after a brief illness. Tom was born at home on July 2, 1936, in Dexter Maine. Tom retired from R. Leon Williams lumber company, of Clifton, after being employed there almost 40 years. Many of those years working side by side with his son Steven.

Tom loved going for walks on the Government road, in Bradley, each day, with his daughter Nancy and her dog Jax. He also enjoyed lunch each weekend with his son Steven and girlfriend Felicia. Tom loved planting and tending his garden and taking day trips all around Maine, New Hampshire, and Vermont. He especially loved driving or riding to the top of Mt. Washington, to admire the view. He loved being outside, especially in the sun, but weather never stopped him from doing what he wanted to do. Tom was a man of few words, but had a big heart. He loved life to the fullest. He would always say that “every day was a great day, as long as he could get out of bed early and get moving.”

He will be greatly missed by his daughter Nancy and her husband Stephen Dumond of Clifton and their dog Jax, and his son Steven Fern and girlfriend Felicia of Eddington, and their dog Scruffy. Tom is survived by his sister Ethel Fern of Dexter, sister Marian and her husband Clair Wood of Veazie, brother Ronald and Rosena Fern of Dexter, brother Bruce and Carol Fern of Bridgeport CT., and sister Joyce and Paul MacDonald of Carmel, as well as many nieces and nephews.

Tom was predeceased by his wife Louise of 49 years, his parents Newell and Esther Fern, sister Francis Libby, and sister Jean Rollins.

A memorial service to celebrate Tom’s life will be held 10:00 a.m. Saturday, July 2, 2016 at the Brewer Chapel of Brookings-Smith, 55 South Main St., Brewer. In lieu of flowers, donations to the Maine Forest and Logging Museum (Leonard's Mills), PO Box 104, Bradley, Maine 04411, would be very much appreciated.Condolences to the family may be expressed at www.BrookingsSmith.com
