Obituary for Joyce Iverson Brown (Iverson)

Joyce Iverson Brown (Iverson)
Joyce (Iverson) Swanson Brown, 77, died December 1, 2016, at a Bangor hospital, after a brief illness. She was born in Bar Harbor, on July 20, 1939, the oldest daughter of Arthur O. and Helena G. (Hodgkins) Iverson and was educated in the Bar Harbor school system, graduating third in her 1957 Class at Bar Harbor High School.

In her early years she and her husband Charles Swanson lived in the Town of Trenton where she was active in community affairs such as school, church and town affairs, having served as Town Clerk in Trenton in the mid 60’s. She spent her entire life in and around the Mount Desert Island area, leaving only for a period of time to live in New Hampshire. There she married Jerry W. Brown and worked for the Town of Seabrook, NH from 1984-1989 as Secretary to the Board of Selectmen.

She is survived by four children from her marriage to Charles Swanson: Michael R. and wife Annemarie; Stephen P. and daughter-in-law Kelley; Peter C. and wife Terri; daughter Deborah Phippen; grandchildren Nicholas, Jessica, Joseph, Brooke, Riley, Rachelle, Shane, Rachel, Jasmine, and Monica. She is survived by two sisters Jillaine Chipman and Jean Crowley and brother Joel Iverson and their families. She was predeceased by her parents Arthur and Helena Iverson, former husband Jerry Brown, and son-in-law John Phippen, Jr.

Joyce was an avid sports fan all her life, always encouraging and supporting her children and then her grandchildren in their academic and athletic interests. She was extremely proud of her sons for the many students they coached. She served as a volunteer on the Senior Little League World Series Committee at Mansfield Stadium in Bangor, Maine, for several years.

Relatives and friends are invited to a celebration of life gathering from 4-8 pm, Fri, Dec. 30, at the home of her son, Michael, in Trenton. Those who wish to remember Joyce in a special way may send contributions for the enhancement of the MDIHS baseball field to the First National Bank of Bar Harbor, C/O Tony C. McKim, P.O. Box #258, Bar Harbor, ME 04609. Condolences to the family may be expressed at www.BrookingsSmith.com.
