John was received by his Lord and Savior on December 9, 2016, surrounded by his loving family, at the age of 72. He was born, son of Lt. Col. John C. and Fern (Dwelly) Foster. John grew up in Brewer, ME., a graduate of Brewer High School class of 1962. He earned his BS in business administration at UMO in 1968, followed by an MBA in 1971, at UMO.
John began his career at Coopers and Lybrand, CPA in Boston, followed by many years in the private sector in the positions of comptroller, director of finance and internal audit and vice president of finance. John was commissioned in the MeANG in 1965. He served 34 years retiring in 1999. During this time he held positions of weapons systems officer, 101st Sqn. Comptroller, Comptroller MeANG, State Head Quarters, Augusta, Commander 243rd EIS, South Portland, ARW Comptroller. From 2,000 to 2014, John worked in finance at Hanscom AFB.
As a boy, he worked delivering over 100 newspapers every Sunday, raising honey bees, shoveling, mowing, and carrying wood. John enjoyed playing baseball and basketball, Cub Scouts and the YMCA and attending Camp Roosevelt and Camp Jordan. He was known throughout his life as a dependable and hard worker, a faithful friend, who loved and cared dearly for his family. John loved nature and physical endeavors as running, biking, sailing “Hobie Cat” and hiking. His love of sports began with listening to the Red Sox on the radio with his dad. John was a God loving man who practiced his deep faith in all aspects of his life. He will be remembered by so many as a unique man who was always there, who cared, who mentored, who prayed, and most of all believed in his Savior.
John was predeceased by his parents, his ex-wife, Shirl Foster, nephew, Andrew “Andy” Williams, and brother-in-law, Richard “Dick” Libby.
He is survived by, sister, Fern Williamslibby, sister, Ethel Dyer and her husband, John and sister, Berrita Foster. John is also survived by nephew, Bruce Williams and wife, Vianka, nephew, David Dyer and wife, Pamela and nephew Paul Dyer and wife, Tammy; also great nephews, Brandon Williams and wife, Melissa, Gregory Williams and Devin Thibodeau; great nieces, Alyssa Thibodeau, Caitlin Dyer, Taylor Dyer; one great, great nephew, Shane Plumley.
Relatives and friends are welcome to call 5 to 7 p.m. Monday December 19, 2016 at the Brewer Chapel of Brookings-Smith, 55 South Main St., Brewer. A funeral service will be held 1 p.m. Tuesday, December 20, at the First United Methodist Church, 40 South Main St. Brewer. Interment with military honors, will be in Mt. Hope Cemetery, Bangor.
