Obituary for Louise Alice Newcomb (Boivin)

Louise Alice Newcomb (Boivin)
Bangor – Louise Alice (Boivin) Newcomb, 78 (formerly of Jay, Maine), entered eternal rest on January 24, 2017, under the care of hospice following declining senility. She was born July 2, 1938 in Augusta, daughter of Rose Alma (Bibeau) and Joseph Emanuel Boivin.
After graduating from Jay High School, she wed her dearly loved Ronald A. Newcomb, at St. Rose of Lima Catholic Church in Chisholm in September 1957. Together, they had four children: three sons and a daughter, while living in Livermore Falls. In 1966, the family moved to Brewer, where Ron worked at Viner Bros., Inc., and Louise stayed at home caring for their children until they were of school age. She was an excellent seamstress, making clothes for her children, stuffed toys, and even doll clothes in her sewing room. She also knitted more mittens and scarves than you could count. Louise was an outstanding cook and baker, always keeping her family happily well fed. Always an outgoing person, she kept many friendships dearly. After the children started school, in 1975 Louise entered the job market, working as a Dietary Supervisor at the Brewer Convalescent Center. She was a dedicated, loyal, and imaginative cook (even ensuring the bread was homemade each day). In 1979, Louise became the Food Service Manager at Beal College in Bangor, with students always requesting more of her famous cookies and whoopie pies. When Ron’s new job at G.H. Bass Co. of Wilton required that they move back to their hometown area, Louise acquired a new job as well in 1983, at Sandy River Nursing Care Center in Farmington as Head Cook & Assistant Supervisor. In 1985, she retired, allowing her to perform volunteer work, as well as spend time with her many relatives and friends. Louise enjoyed visiting, playing card games, quilting, gardening, long walks, and acrylic painting. Once Ron retired, they returned to the Bangor area, moving to Hampden. Her hands were never idle, and she decided to go back to work in the Bakery Department at Hannaford in Hampden. Louise and Ron were avid Boston Red Sox fans. She enjoyed participating in activities at the Bangor Senior Center, and also volunteered at Aunt Nellie’s Attic. Both were communicants of the Catholic faith. When Ron began to decline due to illness, Louise resigned from her job and cared for him at home until he passed in 2011.
Louise is survived by: a son and his wife, Bruce R. and Karen Newcomb of Orrington; twin sons, Dana R. Newcomb of Rhode Island and Kirk R. and wife, Sarah Newcomb, of New York; daughter Jane L. (Newcomb) Campbell and husband, Daniel Campbell, of Brewer; and three grandchildren, Daisy Campbell, Nicholas Newcomb, and Abigail Newcomb. She is also survived by two brothers: Roland Boivin and his wife Patricia of North Jay; and Bernard Boivin and his wife Phyllis of Jay. She is predeceased by her parents, husband, and four brothers: Armand, Raymond, Robert, and Philip Boivin.
Memorial will be private. In lieu of flowers, donations may be sent to Western Maine Homeless Outreach, 547 Wilton Road, Farmington, ME 04938. Special thanks to staff at both Winterberry Heights and Beacon Hospice for their dedication and caring. Condolences to the family may be expressed at www.BrookingsSmith.com
