Obituary for Morna Rawcliffe (Kimball)

Morna K. Rawcliffe
Hampden – With a smile on her face and a song in her heart, Morna (Kimball) Rawcliffe left this world to go on a new voyage January 30, 2017. Her mind was keen, her spirit strong, but her body had worn out. Her youthful spirit, sense of adventure, and pure determination allowed her to enjoy 90 years on this earth.
Morna was born March 5, 1926 in Hampden, the only child of Sabra (Bicknell) and Carle Kimball. She graduated as Salutatorian from Hampden Academy, Class of 1944, and UMaine Orono in 1948. At the University of Maine she truly excelled in athletics – All-Maine basketball, All-Maine field hockey, volleyball, tumbling and modern dance.
On January 5, 1951 Morna married Carlton Rawcliffe, brother of her childhood friend Geraldine (Rawcliffe) Lounsbury. A 38-year marriage produced six wonderful children (our words, not hers) and many grand escapades, visiting all fifty states and multiple countries.
Living in an apartment for many years with six children led to seeking outdoor adventures. She taught us to swim, dive, paddle, row, ski, skate, light campfires, make lean-tos, and generally fostered a love of the outdoors at Swan Lake, the family woodlot and beyond. She was good at just about everything she did...except cooking and cleaning. (We have learned those are inherited traits) However, she never missed the important things in life like sporting events, concerts, plays, recitals, or other performances.
Throughout her life she wore many hats… lifeguard, Girl Scout leader, teacher, coach, singer, bell ringer, dancer, musician, Sr. Olympian, champion bowler, wild animal trainer (a.k.a. mother) and actress. Her greatest performance, which received international acclaim, was at age 80, when she thwarted an assault by a home intruder by faking a heart attack.
Morna was a loyal member of the Hampden Highlands United Methodist Church for 86 years. She sang in the choir for 80 years, played bells, taught Sunday School, cooked chicken pies, held craft workshops for the church fair, and much more. Many enduring friendships developed there.
As the first women's physical education teacher at Hampden Academy, she coached basketball and developed/coached field hockey, gymnastics, volleyball, and track programs. Her love of the Broncos and UMaine was legendary. The U Maine basketball women and all the Hampden Academy athletic teams will miss her unwavering support, recognizable trilling and infamous basketball hat.
Morna was pre-deceased by her husband, Carl and infant daughter, Robin. Her strength, uniqueness, adventurous spirit and love of life were passed on to her offspring. Her children are Heidi Ravenscraft of Hampden, Tami & Wayne Campbell of Hampden, Rudy & Sheridan Rawcliffe of Winterport, Carla & Danny Lafayette of Hampden, Jerry & Su Rawcliffe of Portland, and Jack Rawcliffe of Holden. Her 18 grandchildren are Shawn, Dawn & Sabra Ravenscraft; Jillian, Erin & Trevor Campbell; MacKenzie, Kimble, Rylee & Davis Rawcliffe; Daniel, Ramsey, Annaliese & Logan Lafayette; Darby Rawcliffe; Joanna, Charlie & Richard Rawcliffe. Her four great- grandchildren are, Paige & Gwenyth Ravenscraft, Kieran Baker and Julian Campbell.
She leaves behind her beloved friend Helen Norton and family; basketball pals Jane, Polly, Sue, Beth and Patrice; former daughter- in- law, Jackie Rawcliffe; and many more former students and dear friends. Special thanks to Wendy Smith for her years of loving support to Morna.
Relatives and friends are welcome to call 4-6 pm Friday, February 10, 2017 at Hampden-Gilpatrick Chapel of Brookings-Smith. Funeral services will be at 11 am Saturday, February 11 at Hampden Highlands United Methodist Church, 44 Kennebec Road, Hampden followed by a reception at the Rawcliffe Gymnasium at the original Hampden Academy, 1 Main Road North, Hampden.
Remember Morna in a fun way! Donations in her memory may be made to the Hampden Highlands United Methodist Church, 44 Kennebec Rd, Hampden; University of Maine Women’s Basketball, c/o U of M Foundation, 2 Alumni Place, Orono, ME; or the Morna Rawcliffe Hampden Academy Scholarship Fund c/o Bangor Savings Bank, 19 Main Road North, Hampden.
