Obituary for Eleanor Mavis Whitcomb (Ward)

Eleanor Mavis  Whitcomb (Ward)
Eleanor Mavis Whitcomb, 91, passed away peacefully on February 22, 2017, surrounded by her loving family after a brief illness. She was born March 20, 1925, to Earl and Iola (Bicknell) Ward, in Newburgh where she was raised and spent her entire life.

Eleanor graduated from Hampden Academy, Class of 1942. She enjoyed bowling and competed in many National Tournaments throughout the country, and for over 50 years, she and William followed the Fryeburg Fair. Eleanor loved cooking, gardening and caring for her family and others. She was a lifetime avid fan of the Boston Red Sox, Celtics and the Hampden Broncos. Eleanor volunteered for 40 years at the Hospital Chaplaincy of Newburgh.

In addition to her parents, she was predeceased by her husband of 55 years, William Whitcomb; three grandchildren; three sisters and two brothers.

Eleanor is survived by one daughter, Sally Getchell of Hudson, FL; four sons, Dennis Whitcomb and his partner, Pamela Higgins, of Newburgh, Lawrence “Ricky” Whitcomb and his wife, Lois, of Newburgh, Terrance Whitcomb and his wife, Deborah, of Newburgh, and Gerald Whitcomb and his wife, Sandra, of Brooks; sixty three grandchildren, great grandchildren, and great great-grandchildren; a loving and caring granddaughter, Robin Perkins and her husband, Reese, of Bangor; sister-in-law, Louis Ward of Winterport; daughter-in-law, Shirley Wentworth, and a special neighbor Roland Crooker.

Relatives and friends may call from 1-3:00 p.m. Sunday, February 26, 2017 at the Hampden-Gilpatrick Chapel of Brookings-Smith, 45 Western Ave., Hampden, where a funeral service will begin at 3:00 p.m. Sunday. Interment will be held later in the spring. Those wishing to remember Eleanor in a special way may make gifts in her memory to the Hospital Chaplaincy Service C/O Martha Bankston 2912 Western Avenue, Newburgh, ME 04444.
