BREWER - David Russell Costain, 75, passed away February 25, 2017, at EMMC, surrounded by his loving family after a brief battle with AML. He was born February 6, 1942, the son of Russell and Susanna (McDonald) Costain. David graduated from Brewer High School in 1960 then was employed as a conductor by Maine Central Railroad before being called to serve in the U.S. Army. Returning to MCRR/Springfield Terminal Railroad after his discharge, he continued his employment until his retirement in 2002. David found enjoyment as a courtesy van driver for Quirk Auto Park of Bangor for many years during his retirement period. He was a member of the American Philatelic Society, Union River Stamp Club , Brewer Eagles Club and a lifelong member of the United Transportation Union. David loved history and was an avid stamp collector who enjoyed gardening, fishing, hunting and bowling. Most of all, he loved spending time with his family, friends, and his two fur-babies, Bentley and Duke. David is survived by his loving wife of 31 years, Margaret A. Costain; sons, Thomas Costain of Saco, Kenneth Costain of Bangor, and Jeffery Varner of CT; daughter Laurie Howard of Ornville; brother Dean Costain and his wife Bernardine of Beverly Hills, FL; sisters Connie Avery of Brewer and Diann Adams of Punta Gorda, FL; grandchildren Charlotte, Callie, Lila, Samantha, Heather and Linda; several great-grandchildren, nieces, nephews, grand-nieces and grand-nephews. In addition to his parents, David was predeceased by his brother Donald Costain of Brewer; sisters Susan D. Curtis of Brewer, and Catherine Foss of Brewer. Relatives and friends are welcome to join in a Celebration of Life service at 2 p.m. Saturday, March 11, 2017 at Redeemer Luther Church, 540 Essex St. Bangor, ME, with the Rev. Elaine Hewes officiating. Interment will be in July.
Those wishing to remember David in a special way, may contribute in his memory to Redeemer Lutheran Church.
