Obituary for Ellen Jean Frederick

Ellen Jean Frederick
Bangor-Ellen Jean (Lougee) Frederick, 93, died peacefully on March 25, 2017, with her children by her side. She was born in New Limerick, ME, September 28, 1923, the daughter of Clyde M. and Maryon E. Lougee. Ellen graduated from Bangor High School, 1941 where she enjoyed Jr. Exhibition, drama, and field hockey. After high school she attended Maine Central Institute in Pittsfield, where she was known for her artistic ability, and where she met and courted by her beloved Bill Frederick. Ellen attended the University of Maine until Bill left in January 1943 for radar training and enlistment in the Army Air Corp. She followed him by train to Monroe, Louisiana, where they were married on Feb. 26, 1944. During the next 9 years they became parents to five children: Dr. William J. Frederick, Jr., Stephen A. Frederick, Martha J. Frederick, Philip C. Frederick and Maryon R. Frederick. After the war, Ellen and Bill became partners, and, in 1963, owners of her parents business, Lougee and Frederick's Florist, Inc. They served the community until their retirement in 1988. Ellen was active in the Bangor community as a member of Patawa Club, Lionettes Club, and Altrusa, and was active in her children's school life through the PTA, and Brownie and Girl Scout leadership. She was also a member of D.A.R. Ellen was a lifelong member of St. John's Episcopal Church in Bangor. A great joy of Ellen's life was their Wisperwin Morgan Farm horse program, producing many champions, including National Grand Champion, Wisperwin Patti Star. Their farm achieved an outstanding show record for more than 20 years. Ellen loved spending time with all her grandchildren at the farm where many Thanksgivings and Christmases were shared together. Her grandchildren have many happy memories of time spent there with their dear 'Gammie'. Ellen was predeceased by her beloved husband, Bill in 2000 after 56 years of marriage, and by her parents and brother George. She is survived by her sons and their spouses, Jim and Kriistina, Steve and Cathy, and Phil and Betsy; and by her daughters, Martha and Willie Vicens, and Maryon King; adored grandchildren William J. III (Bill), Anna, Erika, Jessica, Sam, Jake, Luke, Carrie, Noelle, Leigh, Jody, Niki, Jimmy, Ellen, and Veki; and her many great grandchildren and great great grandchildren, and nieces and nephews. Ellen will be remembered for her love of family and missed by us all. Special thanks for the love and care given to Ellen by the staff at Cascade Unit at Westgate Manor. A funeral service will be held 11 a.m., Thursday, March 30, 2017, at St. John's Episcopal Church, 225 French St., Bangor, with the Reverend Canon Marguerite A.H. Steadman, Rector, and Rev. Dr. Leigh Vicens, granddaughter, officiating. Interment will be in Mt. Hope Cemetery, Bangor.
