Obituary for John Joseph Mooney

HARBORSIDE and BANGOR - John Joseph Mooney, 89, of Harborside Maine and Bangor, passed away on Monday April 10, 2017, peacefully at his home with his family by his side. He was born May 4, 1927 in Bangor, the son of the late John J. Mooney and Annie (Connors) Mooney.

John “Big John” Mooney graduated from John Bapst High School in 1947 and Higgins Classical Institute in 1948. He was a standout athlete in Basketball, Football and Baseball. He also attended St. Anslems College in Manchester, NH on a basketball scholarship.

John proudly served his country in the United States Marine Corps during World War ll and the Korean Conflict. After returning from the military, he married the love of his life, Cynthia Ann (Blake) Mooney, and enjoyed 50 years of marriage. He was employed as director of sales for the Northeast region for Kyanize Paints, Inc., from 1958 until his retirement. He served three terms in the Bangor City Council and was elected to the position of Mayor in 1973 and 1976 where he served as Chairman 1977-78. Concurrently, John was elected to two terms as a Penobscot County Commissioner from 1973-1979. In the years that followed his retirement John was elected and served on many other Boards and Councils including the National Association of Counties, the Knights of Columbus and the Elks Club. In 2006 he was nominated and served on the Board of Trustees for the Maine Maritime Academy. He also, by unanimous voice vote, served two terms as honorary Mayor of Harborside, Maine.

He is survived by his children and their spouses: John J. Mooney and Nina (Rogers) Mooney of Shreveport, LA; Ann C. (Mooney) Kennedy and Robert D. Kennedy of Kennebunk; and Mark C. Mooney and Jennifer (Woywod) Mooney of Kennebunk. He also leaves six grandsons: Patrick Mooney of Warner Robins, GA, Kevin and his wife Jennifer (Bryant) Kennedy, Conner and his fiancée Zoe Hagan, and John Kennedy of Kennebunk; and Joseph and Kyle Mooney of Kennebunk.

Relatives and friends are welcome to call 5 to 7pm Thursday, April 20, 2017 at Brookings-Smith, 133 Center Street, Bangor. A Funeral Mass will be held 11am Friday April 21, 2017 at St. Paul the Apostle Parish, St. John’s Catholic Church, 207 York Street, Bangor followed by the Rite of Committal at Mount Pleasant Catholic Cemetery, Bangor. The family invites relatives and friends to share conversation and refreshments at the Family Reception Center of Brookings-Smith, 163 Center Street, Bangor, following the services Friday.
