Obituary for Adrian Joseph Brooks

Adrian “Brooksie” Joseph Brooks
Bangor
Brooksie was born April 19, 1931, in Orono, Maine, the son of Francis H. and Lola M. (Buraby) Brooks. He graduated from Orono High School in 1951. He joined the United States Navy during the Korean conflict. Brooksie completed the Navy training course for Hospital Corpsmen, Second Class. He served on the destroyer escort 2102669 U.S. Albert T. Harris 447 out of Newport, RI.

Upon his return from service, like many others, he received a Certificate of Appreciation for his service during that period of danger, from Maine State Governor Edmund Muskie.

Brooksie attended Higgins Classical Institute and then the University of Maine.

Brooksie married Mary Jane Peavey from Bangor, and they moved to Belfast where they raised their family and became involved in the community.

His beloved wife Jane, who passed in 1988, his parents and his three brothers predeceased Brooksie. They are Francis E. Brooks, Thomas L. Brooks, and George E. Brooks. His survivors are Thomas’ wife Phyllis, a sister Kathleen “Kitty” Pelletier and her husband Raoul of Florida, his daughter Martha Ellen Grant, her husband and their children Christina and Ryan also from Florida, and his son John Anthony, his wife Maya and their son Preston from California.

Brooksie worked for twenty years as the Northeast District Manager for Thoro System Products, and as a licensed realtor in the mid-coast area before retiring. He served the community as a member of the Jaycees and the Belfast Water District’s Board of Trustees. During his leisure, he enjoyed golf, fishing, and boating in Penobscot Bay.

Brooksie spent his retirement years with his close friend Patti Lord, and they became domestic partners. Brooksie grew close to Patti’s sisters, her children, and grandchildren. When Patti’s granddaughter Ayla Geel called Brooksie “Bo-Bo” as a baby the affectionate nickname stuck with him for the remainder of his life.

Everyone close to Brooksie recognized his unusual sense of humor, moreover his kindness and generosity of spirit.

In 2012, Brooksie and Patti moved from Belfast to Bangor where Brooksie eventually resided at the Maine Veterans’ Home. The family is grateful for the attention, care, and recognition he received.

At his request, there will be no formal service rather a private ceremony with military honors for internment. Anyone who wishes to honor his memory and service may send a donation in his name to the Activities Fund in the care of Ingrid, Maine Veterans’ Home, E Unit, 44 Hogan Rd. Bangor, Maine 04401.
