Bangor - Helen Alice (Sutton) Boulter of Bangor passed away peacefully in her home on May 9, 2017. In August 2016, she had celebrated her 87th birthday. Helen was born in the Sutton Farms farmhouse in Orono on August 27, 1929, the daughter of Robert M. and Gladys Sutton. Helen grew up in Orono, attending Orono High School and graduating in 1948. During high school, she was a member of the cheerleading squad, participated in student theater productions and scholastically, she was one of the top students in her graduating class. Following graduation, Helen attended the University of Maine in Orono, majoring in Home Economics. She was a member of the Chi Omega sorority. It was at the university bookstore where she worked while also attending the university that she met the love of her life, Arthur Boulter. They were joined in marriage in Bangor on February 10, 1951. Helen and Arthur lived for short periods in Pennsylvania, New York, and Massachusetts, where Arthur was employed before returning to Maine in 1953, settling in Bangor and raising four children. Helen was a wonderful, devoted mother and wife. She was a bright, kind-hearted, gentle, selfless and unconditionally loving person who was a source of great support and encouragement over the years to her family and many others. Helen was also an attractive woman and a very stylish dresser, always keeping up with the latest fashions. Helen cared for her mother for many years following the death of her father. Helen was a long-time member of the First Baptist Church of Bangor and a regular breakfast patron of Geaghan's restaurant where she enjoyed meeting family and friends. Helen and her family spent many enjoyable years at the family camp on Molasses Pond. Helen attended innumerable swim meets cheering on and providing great encouragement to her three sons during their years on the Bangor High School swim team. She held special memories of her numerous pleasure trips to Bermuda with Arthur. Helen and a neighborhood friend took an extraordinary journey in the 1980s to mainland China, touring the country with her brother and his family. She and Arthur also had the privilege of having a one-on-one lunch in the Blaine House with a sitting Governor, the Honorable Angus S. King, Jr. It was a delightful lunch and the Governor was a gracious and engaging host. Once her children graduated from high school, Helen re-entered the workforce and thoroughly enjoyed her work and her coworkers. She was employed by Porteous, Mitchell and Braun in the Bangor Mall from 1978 until its closing, working in cosmetics and as an Estee Lauder sales associate. Following the store's closing in the early 2000s, Helen worked for many more years for AAA, Northern New England as the office receptionist. Helen loved to host large holiday gatherings with family and friends which she did for many, many years. She also loved to garden, knit sweaters, mittens and Christmas stockings and do jigsaw puzzles. Surviving Helen and cherishing their memories of her are: her daughter Karen Young and her husband Duane, her eldest son David E. Boulter and his partner Ellen Blair; her youngest son Dr. Joseph R. Boulter and his spouse Dr. Avis Chen Boulter; her grandchildren David Thayer, Jr., Joshua Thayer, Jon Boulter, Jennifer Parks, Andrew Boulter, Elizabeth Boulter, Alexis Boulter and Bryan Boulter; three great grandchildren Lauren Thayer and Carter and Owen Parks; brother and sister-in-law Robert and Judith Sutton of Quincy, Florida; special nieces Kimberly Sutton of Maryland and Jennifer Herndon of Georgia and nephews Robert MacDonald of Bangor and Thomas MacDonald of Bath. Helen leaves behind caring neighborhood friends including her close friend of fifty years Marjorie Harrison and her children Jonathan and Nancy Harrison, Bill and Barbara Hodgkin and their daughters Rebecca and Debbie, Phil and Marilyn Lander and their son Joshua, and Janet and Steve Lee and friends Myra Phillips of Arizona and Camille Maben of California. Special thanks are extended to Ila Mae of Healing Spirit Healthcare, Loving Touch and St. Joseph HomeCare and Hospice for all the care and kindnesses shown to Helen over the past year. Helen's parents, her husband of 64 years Arthur and her beloved son Jon predeceased her. A funeral service will be held 10 a.m., Monday, May 15, 2017, at Brookings-Smith, 133 Center Street, Bangor, followed by a brief reception for family and friends at the Family Reception Center of Brookings-Smith, 163 Center Street, Bangor.
