William Mouradian, DMD

William (Austin) Flewelling Mouradian, DMD, was born August 10, 1928 in Calais, Maine. Although his birth father, William Austin Flewelling, died soon after Bill was born, he was fortunate his mother, Barbara (Johnson) remarried Leo Mouradian, who was a wonderful father to Bill. Bill died on May 11, 2017 surrounded by his extended family after a long, productive and meaningful life as a son, husband, father, grandfather, great grandfather, dentist and friend to many.
Bill was an optimist who saw the best in everyone. He loved life, his family and his work. He had several nicknames that reflected this, as well as his sense of humor, including “Bill the Drill on Hammond St. Hill.” He often signed letters and notes with T.B.C. - The Big Cheese. He taught his family an incredible work ethic by example, retiring after 53 years as a practicing dentist. His office team included his wife, Margaret, who worked as a dental hygienist and together they accomplished the impossible – a dental visit that people enjoyed.
He was a lifelong learner for whom education, formal and otherwise, was a top priority. He attended Bangor High School where he was a successful student and athlete. He played football and participated in track and field, taking third place in high hurdles in the state championship meet during his senior year. He graduated in 1947 and attended all of his class reunions up until very recently. He then attended the University of Maine at Orono, gained early acceptance to the dental program at Tufts Dental College in Boston, and received his DMD from Tufts in 1954. Consistent with his belief in the value of education, he attended many continuing education programs in dentistry at Boston University and Harvard University Dental schools. He also supported numerous children and grandchildren through countless degrees and, when he himself could no longer read to study, he became devoted to lectures on DVD.
Bill had a keen sense of humor, and particularly enjoyed puns as well as witty poetry. He had a tremendous musical talent. In addition to playing saxophone in school, he taught himself to play a number of instruments by ear including the harmonica, the accordion, the mandolin and piano.
He was also an avid fisherman and enjoyed organizing annual fishing expeditions to various sporting camps in Maine, Canada and upstate New York with his son, sons-in-law and grandsons. The highlight of their trips was a 16-and-a-half pound togue that he caught at West Grand Lake in Maine in 2005.
Bill loved being the patriarch of a large family, caring for his own parents as well as providing for several subsequent generations. He is survived by his wife of 64 years, Margaret Anne (Howatt) Mouradian (Brewer, ME) and children, Laurie Mouradian (Orono, ME), Robert and Angela Mouradian (Canton, MA), Libby Mouradian and Jim Feury (South Portland), and Melinda (Mouradian) and Kevin Carr (South Portland, ME). He is also survived by grandchildren and their families: Bryan Adams and Carrie Mead, Amy (Adams) and Steve Amico, Maggie Topel, Avery Topel, Ben Mouradian, Emma Mouradian, Monica (Mouradian Tucker) and great grandchildren Edison Amico, Sophia Tucker and Luis Soria.
The family would like to extend a special thanks to caregivers from Aging Excellence and Beacon Hospice for their phenomenal care of Bill and support to his family during this journey.
A service in celebration of his life will be held 12 Sunday, May 21, 2017 at Brookings-Smith, 133 Center St., Bangor. The family invites relatives and friends to share conversation and refreshments at the Family Reception Center of Brookings-Smith, 163 Center St., following the service.
