Obituary for Dana Ellery Young

Dana Ellery Young
WINTERPORT – Dana Ellery Young, 64, went to be with the lord June 7, 2017, at his beloved home in Winterport. He was born September 26, 1952, in Skowhegan, the son of John and Hattie (Heald) Young.

Dana was a loyal and faithful husband and family man. Though he had no children of his own, he took great pleasure in spoiling his many nieces and nephews, as well as the neighborhood children that lived close to him. Dana went so far as to whittle and create special intricate boxes in which he put gifts. He and Diane delighted in watching the children try to figure out how to open them. Dana enjoyed making the things and places around him beautiful. His home and yard were reflections of this love and devotion. Each nook and space was a story to him and he enjoyed sharing them with his friends and family. Dana loved the outdoors, especially fishing and hunting. Dana and Diane enjoyed fishing every year on Moosehead Lake and staying in a cabin along the lake. During one particular fishing trip with his nephews and brother-in-law, Dana tossed a nephew into a lake when the nephew he was a bit slow in getting out of bed in the morning. True to his witty nature, when the same nephew held him over the pond at his home 30 years later, Dana said, “I know you can throw me in, but I really wish you wouldn’t!” Dana was quite the inventor. If you needed someone to help you build or create something gas powered, he was the man to go to. It was said that if it didn’t have a seat and an engine, he wouldn’t have his butt on it. With Dana’s love for creating and solving problems, he made many things that were amazing. True to his giving nature, he built a small golf course, complete with a watering system, for a neighbor who wasn’t able to get out onto the links anymore. Dana’s family now wishes that he is able to find the comfort and peace that he so much deserves.

Dana was predeceased by his father. Surviving are his wife and best friend of 45 years, Diane; mother, Hattie Young; brothers, Greg Young and wife Ellen, and Bruce Young and wife Sue; a sister, Beth Young; and many nieces and nephews.

In keeping with Dana’s wishes, there will be no services. Those who wish to remember Dana in a special way may make gifts in his memory to a charity of one’s choice. Condolences to the family may be expressed at BrookingsSmith.com
