Obituary for Patricia Fay Higgins (Ellis)

BANGOR- Patricia Fay Higgins, age 88, died quietly at a Bangor health care facility on Thursday, June 22, 2017 following a year of declining health.

Throughout her life, she was a hard-working and passionate devotee of the fine arts, producing dozens of oil paintings that continue to engage and inspire friends and family members.

Patricia was born in Portland on July 26, 1928, the daughter of Arthur and Vina (Ames) Ellis. The family subsequently moved to Boston where Patricia attended local schools, graduated from high school and worked briefly for a modeling agency. She then began her career with the New England Telephone and Telegraph Co., retiring from the Bangor office in 1981 as a group chief operator.

She was married to Kenneth R. Higgins for 45 years, residing on Outer Broadway and Outer Ohio streets in Bangor during her working career. In the late 1960s, the couple purchased shorefront property at Rays Point in Milbridge. Patricia and Ken moved to Cranberry Point in Corea in 1981 to fulfil one of her long-time dreams. The couple later kept the property as a seasonal home in retirement, spending their final years at their Outer Essex Street home and eventually, Sunbury Village, both in Bangor.

At the age of 80, Patricia designed and oversaw the construction of a large addition to the family’s shorefront property in Corea that provided her with an endless source of enjoyment in her final years,
She loved the works of Debussy and Rimsky-Korsakov, the great Broadway musicals of the 1950s and 1960s and the Beatles. An avid film buff, Patricia was a night owl who would spend the evenings being lulled to sleep by the classic movie channels. She could lose herself for hours in her oil paintings and enjoyed experimenting with various recipes that provided her family with an array of culinary adventures.
She was a member of the Telephone Pioneers of America, the Seaside Grange #567 of Corea and the All Souls Church of Bangor.

She is survived by her son, Arthur Jay Higgins and his wife, Diane, of Corea; six grandchildren, Holly Higgins Shields and her husband, Mark, of Bar Harbor; Amanda Jaye Higgins Pawlowski, and her husband, Tim, of La Grange, Ill.; Eric Heath and his wife, Lisa, of Naples, and Jeffrey J. Heath Jr. and his wife, Shannie, of Washougal, Wash.; Karen Stone Halloran and her husband, Alfred, of Hudson; Adam Stone, of Old Town; several great-grandchildren, nieces, nephews and cousins.

In addition to her parents, Patricia was predeceased by a brother, Arthur, in 1932; her husband, Ken, in 2004; a son, Randy Stone, in 2006 and a daughter-in-law, Linda Clapp Stone in 2011.
A private graveside service for family and friends will be held at 11 a.m., Thursday, June 29 on the public grounds portion of the Mount Hope Cemetery in Bangor.

The family wishes to express their gratitude to all those who aided in Patricia’s care over the last several months and requests that in lieu of flowers, donations be directed to: VNA Hospice of Eastern Maine, 885 Union Street, Suite 220, Bangor, Maine 04401.
