Obituary for Ellen Sanborn Young

HAMPDEN - Ellen (Ellis) Grant Young, 99, died June 28, 2017 at her home in Hampden. She was born July 7, 1917 in Brewer, daughter of Benjamin H. and Frances (Sanborn) Ellis.

Ellen graduated from Brewer High School, class of 1934 and from the Maine School of Commerce in 1936. After college, Ellen worked as a secretary and married classmate, Donald L. Grant in May, 1940. After Donald’s death in 1955, Ellen took an active part in the management of Grant’s Dairy as President and Treasurer, retiring in 1994. She always played an active part in the community and served on the following boards: Northeast Bank, Eastern Maine Healthcare, YMCA Foundation, Phillips Strickland Foundation and was United Way Campaign Chairman in 1980. She worked diligently on every YMCA and YWCA Capital Campaign. In May 2004, Ellen received an Honorary PHD from Husson College. Ellen was interested in
reading, bridge and travel. Ellen married Robert W. Young in 1961. They traveled through all 48 states in their motor home, as well as visiting Alaska and Hawaii. Ellen was a member of Hammond Street Congregational Church, Penobscot Valley Country Club, Eastern Maine Auxiliary, St. Joseph Auxiliary, Patawa Club, Junior League of Bangor, Maine and YWCA of Bangor.

Ellen was predeceased by her first husband, Donald L. Grant in 1955; a son, Winslow L. “Windy” Grant, II; a sister, Effie (Ellis) Hendrickson and a brother, Lewis K. Ellis. Surviving, in addition to her husband, Robert W. Young of Hampden are a son, Benjie Grant and wife, Francine of Holden; stepsons, Robert J. and wife Daisy Young of Jacksonville, Florida and Richard A. Young of Gray; grandchildren: Maureen Vasquez, R. Jeff Young, David Young, Amy Young Carroll; great grandchildren: Allie Belanger, Emma, Sophie, and Charlotte Young, Ella and Lily Carroll; brother-in-law, Ed Hendrickson; several nieces and nephews, and special friend, Mary Ellen Gilley. The family would to thank Emily and Dan, EMMC Hampden Family Medicine, for their care and thoughtfulness. The family would like to thank the team from VNA Home Health Hospice, including Christine and Christine. They were instrumental in her comfort care. The family would also like to add special thanks of sincere appreciation to all the girls associated with Loving Touch, each of which, made Ellen’s life easier, fun and much, much more comfortable – with special thanks to Jan and June.



A memorial service will be held 11am Friday, July 7, 2017 at Brookings-Smith, 133 Center Street, Bangor with the Rev. J. Gregory Bridges-Music of the Hammond Street Congregational Church officiating. The family invites relatives and friends to share conversation and refreshments at the Family Reception Center, 163 Center Street, Bangor immediately following the service. Interment will be in the Pine Grove Cemetery, Bangor.
