Obituary for Donald A Scripture

BANGOR – Donald A. Scripture, 97, died peacefully August 9, 2017, surrounded by his loving family. He was born June 18, 1920, in Bangor, the son of Alfred W. and Margaret (MacKay) Scripture.

Donald graduated from Bangor High School, then shortly after, joined the Army in 1941 during World War II. He served his country until the war ended in 1945, serving a total of 4 ½ years. Donald married his sweetheart, Jean, after returning from the war on September 28, 1945. He joined the Bangor Fire Department where he worked for 28 years. After retiring, he worked for the State of Maine as a Fire Marshall for many years. After retiring permanently, Donald and Jean spent several winters in Florida. Donald was a member of St. John’s Episcopal Church, a longtime member of the Bangor Lodge of Elks #244, a lifetime member of Rising Virtue Lodge #10, AF & AM of Bangor, member of Maine Consistory 32  Scottish Rite Bodies, Valley of Bangor and Portland, and a lifetime member of VFW Post #1761 of Bangor. Donald enjoyed sitting on the porch after dinner, where he would visit with family and friends. He enjoyed telling stories of the war and family stories when he was a young boy. Donald was a kind and loving man who was always willing to help in a time of need.

In addition to his parents, he is predeceased by his wife of 57 years, Jean Scripture; a daughter, Margaret Scripture; sisters, Marion Giberson, Alice Bell, and Janet Sweet; brothers, Kenneth Scripture, Alfred Scripture Jr., and James Scripture; and a step-mother, Florence Scripture. Surviving are a daughter, Debra Bragg and husband, George of Bangor; grandchildren, Dawn Stitham, Melissa Bragg and husband, Joe Pierce; great-grandchildren, Shannon Thomas and wife Melissa, Tyler Thomas, Haleigh Wood, Landon Pierce, all of Bangor; close cousin, Beverly Scripture of Brewer, and many nieces and nephews.

Relatives and friends are welcome to call 6-8 pm, Monday, August 14, 2017, at Brookings-Smith, 133 Center St., Bangor, where a funeral service will be held 11 a.m., Tuesday, August 15, 2017 with the Rev. Cannon Marguerite A.H. Steadman, rector of St. John’s Episcopal Church officiating. Interment will be Maple Grove, Bangor, immediately following the service. The family invites relatives and friends to share conversation and refreshments at the Family Reception Center of Brookings-Smith, 163 Center St., Bangor, and immediately following interment.
