Allison Joseph  Briggs
BREWER %u2013 Allison Joseph Briggs, 90, died October 20, 2017, at the Maine Veterans Home in Bangor, surrounded by his loving family. He was born August 23, 1927, in Houlton, the son of Ralph and Isabelle (Coffey) Briggs. Allison attended schools in Lincoln, including Mattanawcook Academy, from which he graduated in 1945. He served in the U.S. Navy from the fall of 1945 to August of 1946. Allison went on to graduate from the University of Maine, Orono in 1950 with a Bachelor of Science, Civil Engineering. On September 20, 1947, he married Louise Emily Whitney. Together, they had four children; three sons and one daughter. Allison and Louise enjoyed traveling together to other countries as well as the frequent family and friend's picnics in Maine. Allison was president of Briggs Inc., a family owned beverage distribution business, which he helped start with his father and brothers. He made lifelong relationships with many business people in the Greater Bangor area. Allison was a business leader, actively involved in many community and church activities. He was a member and past master of Horeb Lodge #93, AF & AM, of Lincoln. Allison was the first President of United Community Service, Penobscot Valley, for distinguished community service. He also served as a member of the board of directors of the YMCA, a past president of the Kiwanis Club of Bangor, where he received an award for Outstanding Club Leadership, and past president of the Bangor Chamber of Commerce, where he received the distinguished service award. Allison was also recognized for his service to the United Cerebral Palsy of New England and Maine. Allison served on numerous boards and committees at All Souls Congregational Church of Bangor, including executive board, diaconate, moderator, nominating, usher, Christian education, search, and stewardship committees. Along with his wife Louise, he received the Mandatum award on April 30, 2006, for service to his church and community. Allison's special interest and hobbies included tennis and bridge with his wife, Louise, and friends, golf and fishing with his sons, and watching his grandchildren and great-grandchildren excel at their activities from orchestra to football, baseball, cheerleading, and swimming. Their triumphs were his cherished moments. Left to honor Allison and remember his love are his son, Daryl Briggs and wife, Pam of Brewer; daughter, Gayle Briggs and husband, Joseph Sukaskas of Portland; son, Bryan Briggs and wife, Debbie Walls of Cumberland; son, Gary Briggs and wife, Tammy of Bangor; eight grandchildren, Erik Briggs and wife, Rena of Framingham, MA, Nathan Briggs and wife, Molly of Hampden, Wilson Briggs and wife, Paige of Freeport, Brandon Briggs of Biddeford, Alyson Briggs of Brewer, Zachary Briggs of South Portland, Alexander Briggs of Portland, and Catherine Briggs of Cumberland; three great-grandchildren, Addison Briggs of Hampden, Makenzie Briggs of Framingham, MA, and Wilson Briggs of Freeport; along with his brother, Peter, and sister, Joan Griffin, and many nieces and nephews. Allison was predeceased by his beloved wife, Louise (Whitney) Briggs, to whom he was married for 66 years; parents, Ralph and Isabelle; brothers, Murray and Richard; and sisters, Jeanette Smith and Susan McEachern.
