Frederick "Butch" V.  Minson
VERONA ISLAND – Frederick Vernon Minson “Butch”, 71, passed away at his home October 30, 2017. He was born February 5, 1946, in Alexandria, VA, the son of Frederick L. and Margaret V. (Davis) Minson.

Butch graduated from Old Lyme High School, Class of 1964. Following high school, he attended the Coast Guard Academy, graduating in 1968. After graduating from the Coast Guard Academy, Butch attended MIT where he earned master’s degrees in both Naval Architecture and Marine Engineering. He served in the Coast Guard for 21 years, retiring as a commander. Following retirement, Butch coached the Maine Maritime Sailing Team for 14 years. He led the Coast Guard Academy sailing team as a team captain. In 1966, Butch led the team to win the college National Sailings Championship and in 1968, he won the college Single-handed National Sailing Championship. He also placed second at the U.S. Olympic trials to represent the United States in sailing. Butch always said sailing wasn’t hobby or a sport, but instead a life-long addiction.

Butch is survived by his loving wife, Janice Minson, of 33 years; a son, Matthew Minson; a daughter, Monica Minson; step-mother, Bea Minson; siblings, Ellen Hill, Betty Minson, Susan McCarthy, and Teri Ingham; and many extended family members.

Funeral service will be held 10 a.m., Saturday, November 4, 2017, at the Hampden-Gilpatrick Chapel of Brookings-Smith, 45 Western Avenue, Hampden, ME 04444. Interment to follow. Those who wish to remember Butch in a special way may make gifts in his memory to Stockton Harbor Sailing Center, P.O. Box 510, Stockton Springs, ME 04981.
