BREWER AND JONESPORT – Janice Beal Mitchell, 84, passed away November 14, 2017, at a Bangor hospital, surrounded by her loving family. She was born August 9, 1933, in Jonesport, the daughter of Arnold and Phyllis Beal.

Janice was educated in the Jonesport school system and devoted her life to her family. Over the years, she worked in the restaurant and hospitality industry; as a saleswoman in clothing and cosmetics; as a grocery clerk; and a Maine craftswoman. She was a lifetime member of the Tuesday Club of Jonesport, involved in the PTA, community fundraising, and worked on political campaigns for Muskie and Hathaway in the late 1960’s. Janice was a resident of the Ellen M. Leach home for 20 years.

In addition to her parents, she was predeceased by her brother, Alan and sister-in-law Charlotte (Tart) Beal, and son-in-law Ernesto G. Ballesteros, MD. She leaves behind four children: a daughter Paula Ballesteros of Bangor; son Brad Mitchell and his wife Brenda of Jonesport; daughter Joy Stevens and her husband Harry of Brewer; and son Scott Mitchell and his fiancée Julie Vilasuso of Orrington; seven grandchildren, Brendon Stevens and his wife Theresa of Lansdale, PA; Kellie McKenney and her fiancé Brent Stewart of Brewer; Erika Masterson and her husband Corey of Brewer; Chris Ballesteros and his wife Stephanie of Marlborough, MA; Kyle Mitchell of Manchester, NH; Mandi Mitchell of Brewer; and Jonathan Ballesteros of Bangor; four step-grandchildren Lisa Ballesteros and her husband David Raker of Northampton, MA; Michael Ballesteros and his wife LuAnn of Glenburn; Christine Molina and her husband Luis of Miami, FL; and Mia Ballesteros of Denver, CO; 14 great-grandchildren, Christian, Olivia and Gavin Stevens; Jacob McKenney; Ernesto, Evalyn, and Elden Ballesteros; Cooper and Cosmo Masterson; Samantha Ballesteros; Taylor Molina; Maceo Raker; and Megan and Mitchell Stewart; many nieces and nephews, sisters-in-law, and a special cousin Lanta Hachey.

Relatives and friends are welcome to call 12 noon, Friday, November 24, 2017, at the Jonesport Wesleyan Church, 143 Main St., Jonesport, where a funeral service to celebrate Janice’s life will be held 1 p.m with the Rev. Phyllis Merritt, officiating. Interment will be in Greenwood Cemetery, Jonesport. The family invites relatives and friends to share conversation and refreshments in the church hall immediately following interment.
