Orrington – Carolyn Delle (Quimby) Howard, 99, passed peacefully at home on January 1, 2018 surrounded by family. Born July 31, 1918 Carolyn was the daughter of Sherman L. Quimby and Mabel Rose Upshall and was the first of the three children raised on the Orrington Quimby farm. She cherished family life and was known for her smiling kindness, quiet generosity, loving nature, and forgiving spirit. Carolyn attended a one-room school house and graduated from Brewer high school in 1936. She completed her studies at the Maine School of Commerce (Husson University) in 1937. James R. Howard and Carolyn were married August 14th, 1938 at her husband's grandparents Surry saltwater farm. Carolyn was bookkeeper for the Howard Barrel Company in Brewer, makers of wooden lobster shipping barrels before partnering with James and sons James Jr. and Alan in the highly regarded Tween Hills Farm in Orrington producing milk from registered Holstein cows, currently the last working Orrington dairy farm. For many years Carolyn nurtured new born calves and managed the farm finances while as a home maker tended to an active farm family. Carolyn took meticulous care of her flower and vegetable gardens while being an excellent cook and baker. In addition to her farm life she was an active member of the community. Carolyn belonged to Enterprise Grange No. 173, Order of the Eastern Star Millwee No. 198, and was a founding participant in local 4-H activities. A lifetime member of Orrington Center Church, Carolyn functioned in multiple capacities including Sunday School superintendent, Trustee, Women's Society of Christian Service (Ladies Aid) and mission outreach. Presiding as Orrington’s oldest resident, she received the Boston Post Cane in 2012 and served as Grand Marshall of Orrington's 225th Old Home Week Parade in 2015 – where during the week's festivities Tween Hills Farm was honored as Farm Family of the Year. She is survived by her three children James Jr. and his wife Joan, Alan and his wife Susan, and Elizabeth Bicknell and her husband Albert, all of Orrington. Also surviving are her sister Josie Starr Quimby. Grandchildren are: Susan, James III, David, Michael, Patrick, Timothy, Catharine, Brian, Andrew, Alycia, Arron, Jonathan, and Jason, along with 30 great grandchildren and many nieces and nephews.
Carolyn was predeceased by James R. Howard, her beloved husband and partner of 58 years, her brother Cecil Quimby, sister in law Marguerite Quimby, a son Ronald, and her parents Sherman and Mabel Quimby.
Relatives and friends are invited to call from 5:00-7:00 p.m., Thursday, January 11, 2018 at the Brewer Chapel of Brookings-Smith, 55 South Main St., Brewer. A Christian service and celebration of Carolyn’s life will be held 11:00 a.m. Friday, January 12, 2018 at the Orrington Center Church, 468 Dow Rd, Orrington with Reverend Dick Woehr officiating and Reverend Roger Davis assisting. A time for visiting and refreshments to follow in the church fellowship hall. In lieu of flowers, remembrance donations to honor Carolyn’s life and memory may be made to Orrington Center Church, 468 Dow Road Orrington, ME 04474, for a special project for the church.
