Obituary for Shirley Frances Howard
HAMPDEN – Shirley F. (Nickerson) Howard, 89, went to be with the Lord February 13, 2018, with her family by her side. She was born September 29, 1928, in Hampden, the daughter of Roger and Vivian (Emerson) Nickerson.
Shirley graduated from Hampden Academy, Class of 1947. Following graduation, she attended Husson College. Shirley worked in retail for many years, including Freese’s Department Store as a department manager for 20 of those years. She was a Past Worthy Matron of the Hermon Chapter of the Eastern Star, and a longtime member of the Columbia Street Baptist Church.
In addition to her parents, Shirley was predeceased by her husband, Paul Simmons; sons, Darrell “Tunky” Moores, and Jimmy Moores; and a brother, James Nickerson. Surviving are daughters, Pamela Umel, Marcia Dunn and husband, Howard, and Marie Walls and husband, Mike; sons, Bruce Moores, and Jeff Moores; 20 grandchildren, 29 great-grandchildren and one on the way. Shirley’s grandchildren and great-grandchildren were the joy of her life. She is also survived by a sister, Louise Vellniueve, two brothers, Elgin Nickerson, and Robert Nickerson; and many nieces, nephews, and extended family.
A funeral service will be held 3 p.m., Sunday February 18, 2018, at the Hampden-Gilpatrick Chapel of Brookings-Smith, 45 Western Avenue, Hampden, with the Rev. Bill Leighton officiating. Relatives and friends are invited to call from 2 p.m. until time of service, Sunday. Interment will be in Locus Grove Cemetery, Hampden, in the spring. Those who wish to remember Shirley in a special way may make gifts in her memory to Hampden Academy, 89 Western Ave, Hampden, ME 04444.
