Obituary for Irving Phinney

Irving Phinney
"OH MY!" Irving Nathaniel Phinney, 86, passed away in the early morning of February 16, 2018 to unite with his wife of 61 years, Alice Lauretta (Parritt) Phinney with their Lord and Savior. He was born September 17, 1931 son of Winfield S. Phinney and Gertrude B (West) of Milbridge, Maine.Irving was predeceased by his wife, Alice, December 11, 2012; sister, Mabel (Phinney) Thibeau and brother, Winfield S. Phinney, Jr. He is survived by older brother, Charles Phinney and wife, Madelyn of Cherryfield and older sister, Norma Phinney) Monsulick of Kents Hill. He is also survived by son, James W. Phinney and his wife, Deborah of Brewer and their children; Lisa (Phinney) Gordon and her husband, Thomas of Glenburn and their children, Andrew, Cody and Zoee; and Justin Phinney of Holden; son, Brenton D. Phinney and his wife, Sandra of Brewer; their children Ashley (Spencer) Gifford and her husband, Jeremy of Brewer and their daughter, Heidi; Troy Spencer and his wife, Nicole of Winterport and their son, Troy; son, Michael E. Phinney and his wife, Lynn of Ellsworth and their children, Aaron Phinney and his wife, July Simpson of Port Orchard, Washington; Nathaniel Phinney and his wife, Nicole of Holden and their children, Kaylie and Kyle; also numerous nieces and nephews. Irving married Alice Parritt of Steuben on July 19, 1951. They lived in Milbridge and Eastport, Maine briefly working as a fish processor and for his brother-in-law, Irving Parritt, at his store in Steuben. The Phinney family lived in Brewer at several locations while Irving worked for Bridge Construction Corporation for many years as an equipment operator. He used that skill to dig the foundation for the original Bangor Baptist Church of which he was also one of its founding members. He later continued that earthwork career building roads for woodcutters of James River Corporation. He retired in 1996 from Georgia Pacific as a licensed wood scaler at their chip plant in Costigan. Like Alice, in his later years Irving "Grampie" developed the awful Alzheimer's disease. It robbed him of knowing his great grandchildren. As this debilitating disease progressed over 5 years of care at Woodlands Senior Living of Brewer he forgot even old friends and his family members. After several bouts of infections and lack of mobility he was most recently transferred to Bangor Nursing and Rehab Center. While there only briefly under their care his body succumbed to this horrific disease after a courageous battle. A memorial service will take place in the spring at Twin City Baptist Church at 559 North Main Street, Brewer with the Rev. Patrick Heuveline officiating. A date and time will be determined later. Anyone wishing to remember Irving in a special way is encouraged to make donations to the Bangor Christian School's Athletics (1476 Broadway, Bangor, ME 04401) as he was fervent supporter of Justin and Lisa Phinney's school sports while they attended BCS. Gifts may also be sent to the Playground Fund at Twin City Baptist Church. (559 North Main Street, Brewer, Me 04412) Condolences to the family may be expressed at
