Obituary for Phyllis Claire Borns (Kuehl)

Phyllis Claire  Borns (Kuehl)
Orono- Phyllis C. (Kuehl) Borns, 87, died peacefully February 27, 2018 at Dirigo Pines with her family by her side. She was born May 23, 1930, in Medford, Massachusetts, the daughter of Adolph Alexander Kuehl and Ella (Fritzsch) Kuehl.

Phyllis graduated as salutatorian of her class at Medford High School in 1948, and received an A.B. degree, magna cum laude, majoring in Sociology, at Jackson College for Women (Tufts University) in 1952.
After receiving her M.A. degree in Counselor Education from the University of Maine in 1983, she worked as a caseworker for Downeast Big Brothers/Big Sisters in Bangor, Maine, until her retirement in 1995.
She received the John W. Coombs Memorial Award, from the United Way of Eastern Maine, was a Named Gift recipient of the American Association of University Women Educational Foundation.

Throughout her adult life she was an ardent believer in volunteerism, helping in that capacity in many community activities, mostly revolving around her interest in the arts, especially in music and the theater, in cooking, and in her church where she was a member for 60 years.

Surviving is one daughter, Donna J. Moore and her husband, Kenneth, of Limerick, PA; three granddaughters, Kelly and Kirsten Moore, and Alexandra Borns; great granddaughter, Mary loda Borns Ferguson; great grandson, Marcus William Ferguson; two nieces and one nephew. She was predeceased by her son, Harold W. Borns, III, and daughter-in-law, Anne Borns, both of St. John, U.S. Virgin Islands; brother, Donald K. Kuehl of Manchester, CT.

The biggest treasures of her life were her children, her grandchildren, her great grandchildren, and her many friends.

A memorial service will be held 3:00 p.m. Friday, March 2, 2018 at the Church of Universal Fellowship, 82 Main St., Orono, with the Rev. Lorna Grenfell, celebrant.
