Obituary for Virginia J. Walker (Coffin)

Virginia J. Walker (Coffin)
Virginia “Ginny” June Walker, 93, went home to be with the Lord on March 5, 2018 at Westgate Center for Rehabilitation in Bangor, Maine. She was born October 15, 1924 in Lee, Maine, the daughter of Elmer and Hazel (Thibodeau) Coffin. She graduated from Lee Academy and married Bill Walker in 1944 while he was at basic training for the army in Muskogee, Oklahoma. They were married for 73 years.

Ginny and Bill settled in Burlington, Maine where they raised their five children. Ginny’s first love was being a wife to Bill and a mother to her children. She had a knack for making home a happy and secure place. She was famous for her sense of humor and mischievousness. Her kids loved her cooking and especially remember her donuts, fudge, popcorn balls and pies. She also served the Lord during those years singing, teaching Sunday School and helping every year with Vacation Bible School at Burlington Congregational Church. In later years, she was a faithful member of the choir at Faith Bible Church in Zephyrhills, Florida where they spent many happy winters. When the children were young, she worked part time at the Burlington and Howland Schools in the hot lunch program. Later in Florida she especially enjoyed her modeling job at Helen’s Sportswear in Zephyrhills.

Ginny is survived by her four daughters: Linda Dow of Livermore, Ellen LaClaire and her husband Phil of Norway, Louise Cross and husband Royce and Jill Bean and husband Raymond, all of Brewer; her daughters in law Nilza Walker of Georgia and Christine Lamson of Brewer; a very special nephew, Chuck Rideout of Burlington and a special, supportive friend Tom Fennelly. She was predeceased by her husband Bill Sr. who died March 25 last year and their son Bill, Jr. who died March 29, 2014. She will be greatly missed by her 9 grandchildren, 14 great-grandchildren and 1 great-great grandchild. She is also survived by her sister Leona and husband Jerre Crocker of Lee. She was predeceased by her brother Alton Coffin and sister Joyce Coffin Lindsay.

The family would like to express their heartfelt appreciation to the wonderful people at Westgate Center who gave Mom the most loving and compassionate care and went the extra mile for her over and over during her three and a half years there. They helped and supported our family tremendously through a very difficult time and we will be forever grateful.

A Service of Remembrance will be held 11 AM, Saturday, March 10 at the Brewer Chapel of Brookings-Smith, 55 S. Main Street, Brewer, with Pastor Andy Spohrer, presiding. The family invites relatives and friends to share conversation and refreshments in the Family Reception Rooms of the Brewer Chapel following the service. Those who wish to remember Ginny in a special way may make gifts to the Westgate Center Residential Care Activity Fund, Attn: Jen Dodge, 750 Union Street, Bangor, ME 04401. Condolences to the family may be expressed at BrookingsSmith.com.
