Obituary for Lorraine Harvey (Quirion)

Lorraine Harvey (Quirion)
Lorraine Harvey
Brewer
Lorraine (Quirion) Harvey, 89, passed away March 9, 2018 at St. Joseph Hospital. She was born in Hartford, CT. July 25, 1928 the older of two children of of Godfrey A. and Eliza (Stewart) Quirion. Following graduation from Brewer High School in 1946, Lorraine worked for Eastern Fine Paper where she held many positions. In 1968 she was sworn to secrecy to assist in the
closing of Eastern Fine Pulp and Paper. The names of people on the job termination list were near and dear to her heart, as she herself worked there as well as her own family for several generations. The closing of the mill was a great loss to the Brewer community. Lorraine decided to take up secretarial work and her career in government included working at the Maine State Capitol as secretary to Governor Kenneth Curtis from the fall of 1968 to 1971. She also held a secretarial position with the 104th and 105th legislature when David Kennedy was Speaker of the House.
Lorraine was an active member of Beta Sigma Phi and Altrusa of Bangor, where she became finance chair from 1981 to 1983. She led the committee to raise $10,000 toward construction of the Ronald McDonald House in Bangor. They reached this goal in just two years, exceeding their original 10 year goal. As chair, she also initiated the first fashion show raising $2,000-$4,000 in funding scholarships for college students. She continued this tradition for 18 years benefiting 72 students. The show continues to this day. Lorraine has participated in Bowl-a-Thons for Big Brothers and Big Sisters and organized a group to paint Camp Capella. During her presidency of Altrusa, she asked all members to become Literacy Volunteers and they did. In 2003, she was awarded the Altrusa Governors Leader in Service Award.
Lorraine was a 30 year volunteer at the Shrine Circus, spinning cotton candy and making snow cones. As an active member of her church where she helped publish a cookbook. She was a Girl Scout leader and a charter member of the Plant and Pray Club, which she helped name due to her “black thumb!” She ended her career in the Eddington Town Office where she assisted registered voters at the polls for many years. Altogether, Lorraine has demonstrated over 30 years of unremitting successful leadership, mentoring and volunteering in her community.
She remained active even during her senior years with much spunk and laughter at Orono Commons.
Lorraine was predeceased by her husband of 67 years, Gerald L. “Jerry” Harvey in 2016.
Surviving are four children, Colleen H. and her husband, Albert L. Smith III of Bangor, Gerald L. Harvey II and his wife, Shirley of Gardiner, Cynthia H. and her husband, Gregory J. Berg of Oak Park, CA, and Lisa H. and her husband, Daniel H. Fitzgerald of Brewer; grandchildren, Meghan (Smith) MacDonald of Bangor, SSG Mark H. Fitzgerald of El Paso, TX., Paul S. Fitzgerald of Bangor and Chelsea (Berg) Imbler of Golden, CO.; great grandchildren, P. Sullivan MacDonald of Madison, WI., Seamus F. MacDonald of Bangor and Hailey E. Nemecek of Richmond, VA.; a sister, Shirley Q. Estes of Brewer.

Relatives and friends are invited to call 5-7 p.m. Friday, March 23, 2018 at the Brewer Chapel of Brookings-Smith, 55 South Main St., Brewer. Private burial will be at Woodlawn Cemetery, Brewer in the spring.

Those wishing to remember Lorraine in a special way may contribute in her memory to the Sunshine Club for Children, C/O Anah Shrine Center, 1404 Broadway, Bangor, ME. 04401.
