Obituary for James Robert Sturgeon

James Robert Sturgeon
James Robert Sturgeon, 67, of Orrington, Maine passed away peacefully April 14, 2018 in Old Town surrounded by his loving family after a long battle with cancer.

James, “Jim” was the first of four sons born to the late Lloyd Sturgeon and Patricia Sturgeon of Orono, Maine on May 18, 1950.

After graduating from Orono High School, Jim enlisted in the US Air Force in September 1969. Jim’s military service included two tours in Southeast Asia during the Vietnam war, with duty stations at Phuket Air Force Base in South Vietnam and Ubon Royal Thai Air Force Base in Thailand. Jim was a Jet Engine Mechanic and was responsible for maintaining the various USAF planes stationed at the bases.

Jim received his honorable discharge from the USAF with the rank of Sargent in September of 1973. After working as a heavy equipment mechanic for Cianbro Construction Company, Jim was hired by the State of Maine Department of Transportation. Jim worked for the State Highway Department until his retirement in 2005.

During his retirement years, Jim continued to enjoy his hobby as an Amateur Ham Radio Operator. Jim would often speak with individuals from around the world on his radio. Jim also served as a Ham Radio Operator in support of the State of Maine Emergency Management Department. Jim also enjoyed sailing with his brother, Michael in and around the waters of Penobscot Bay. One of Jim’s favorite social outings was sharing time at the bar with his 2nd family at the Brookside Grill in Brewer where they enjoyed his jukebox music selections and their deep conversations solving the world’s problems with a cold beer.

Jim is survived by his mother, Patricia Sturgeon, and his three brothers, David of Holden, Gary of Stonington, CT and Michael of Old Town.

The family would like to thank those at Beacon Hospice that showed Jim tremendous love and compassion these last few weeks. The dignity they provided him and the strength they shared with us will be forever treasured.

Those who wish to remember Jim in a special way can make gifts in his memory to the Beacon Hospice of Bangor, Amedisys Foundation, 289 State St, Suite B Bangor, Maine 04401, or online atwww.amedisys.com.
