HOLDEN – Doris Arlene (Countryman) MacDonald, 89, wife of the late Robert E. MacDonald, passed away peacefully May 24, 2018, surrounded by family. She was born April 6, 1929, in Schenectady, NY, the daughter of Lawyer and Emma (Soden) Countryman.

Doris grew up in New York meeting her future husband as he came home with her brother while on leave from the US Army. They married on July 10, 1955, moved to Eddington, Maine, and raised 5 children. Doris and Robert were the owners of several Dunkin’ Donuts in Bangor, Brewer, Belfast, Bucksport, Brunswick, and Presque Isle, until their retirement in 1995.

Doris was predeceased by her husband of 56 years, Robert E. MacDonald; two sons, Mark R. and Craig C. MacDonald; a great-grandson, Mason; a brother, Donald Countryman; and a sister, Beatrice (Countryman) Furbeck. Doris is survived by her children, Bruce E. MacDonald and wife, Katherine of Clifton, Scott A. MacDonald of Holden, and Lynn (MacDonald) Storen and husband, Frederick of Eddington; many grandchildren; great-grandchildren; and a special cat, Sammy. Doris will be greatly missed by special sisters-in-law, Brenda MacDonald of Brewer, Dolores Countryman of Florida, and a long list of family members in New York and Maine that will forever remember Doris.

Relatives and friends are welcome to call 4 – 5 p.m., Friday, June 1, 2018, at the Brewer Chapel of Brookings-Smith, 55 South Main Street, Brewer, where a memorial service will be held 5 p.m., Friday, with Rev. Roger Tracy, officiating. The family invites relatives and friends to share conversations and refreshments at Bruce MacDonald’s home in Clifton immediately following the service Friday. Interment will be private for the family in Meadowbrook Cemetery, Eddington, at a later date. Those who wish to remember Doris in a special way may make gifts in her son’s memory, Mark MacDonald, to the Lafayette Family Cancer Center c/o EMHS Foundation, PO Box 931, Bangor, ME 04402-0931.
