Hampden – It is with a heavy heart that the family of Ian J Henderson, 43 announce his passing on May 27, 2018 after a courageous battle with cancer, at his mother’s home in Howland, ME. He was born April 29, 1975 in Bangor, the son of Dean E Henderson and Mary C (Welch) Goolsby.

Ian was a 1993 graduate of Hampden Academy. He then attended University of Maine where he became a member of Phi Gamma Delta; (FIJI) forming deep, lifelong friendships. After leaving the University of Maine, Ian worked in the mortgage industry. In 2008, he returned to the University of Maine, graduating in 2011 with BA in Political Science. He went on to the School of Policy and International Affairs, (SPIA), at University of Maine and completed his Master of Arts in Global Policy in 2013. While at SPIA, Ian completed an internship at Ibn Khaldun Center, an NGO in Cairo, Egypt, and witnessed, “Egyptians celebrating the birth of democracy and the election of a civilian president for the first time in 80 years”. After graduation, Ian completed a Fellowship at the International Republican Institute in Washington, D.C. Upon his return to Maine he was employed by Wayfair in Bangor.

Ian was a beloved, son, brother, uncle, cousin and friend. He was an incredible person whose brilliance, love, compassion and wit captured all. He was an overcomer who met every challenge in life with determination and grit. Cancer was no exception. Ian continued to have hope and to fight until the end.

Sports were an important part of Ian’s life. Ian was avid fan of the Red Sox and Patriots. Football season provided Ian with a special time of connecting with his brothers and Fraternity brothers. He enjoyed watching the Celtics with Grammy Henderson and brothers. Ian loved camping and spent time with family and friends at Gulf Hagas and the Allagash. Hiking in Baxter state Park was special time with his father and brother. Watching the Wheel of Fortune and a friendly family competition with Jeopardy were a childhood favorite that continued throughout his life.

Ian was predeceased by paternal Grandparents, Dorothy and Sampson Henderson, and maternal Grandparents Florence and Raymond Welch. He was also predeceased by his Uncle Raymond Welch and Aunt Leslie Welch and Uncle Patrick Welch and beloved cousins Ryan Welch and Jon Metcalf. Surviving in addition to his father, Dean E Henderson of Veazie and mother, Mary Goolsby and stepfather David of Howland, are brothers Joshua David Henderson, and his wife Michelle, of Hermon and Richmond Chandler Dickey and his wife, Amanda, of Aldie VA. Ian is also survived by his nephews Dillon and Nathan Henderson, Everett Dickey and niece Amara Dickey and beloved aunts, uncles and cousins from the Henderson, Goolsby, Beerits and Welch families.

A funeral Mass will be held at St Leo the Great, 16 River Rd., Howland Me on Saturday, June 9, 2018 at 11:00 am with Fr. Richard Malo officiating. The family invites relatives and friends to join us later that day, for a Celebration of Ian’s life at the Brooking-Smith Family Center, 163 Center St, Bangor ME from 3:00 – 6:00 pm.
