Obituary for Gilberte Marie Bickford (Dumont)

Gilberte Marie Bickford (Dumont)
Gilberte Marie (Dumont) Bickford, 100, died June 20, 2018 at the Maine Veterans Home in Bangor. She was born March 15, 1918 in Augusta, the daughter of Philomon and Melanie (Paulin) Dumont. Gilberte had to leave school in eighth grade to help take care of her brothers and sisters, while also starting work at Edwards Cotton Mill. She married Guy I. Bickford in November 1942 in a Thanksgiving ceremony. The two were later employed by R.P Hazzard shoe manufacturing company and Taylor Shoe Manufacturing, where Gilberte was a fancy stitcher for 35 years, retiring in 1972. Gilberte and Guy moved to Bangor in 1987 to be closer to their daughter Sandra, and help take care of granddaughter Megan. Upon moving, Gilberte became a communicant at St. Johns Catholic Church, member of the American Legion Aux, Post 84, Orono, and the Veazie Senior Citizens Club. Gilberte enjoyed playing cards, reading, knitting, crocheting and sewing. She would often make her daughter's dance costumes and granddaughter's outfits without using a pattern. Gilberte loved listening to music and would dance to it when she was younger. She especially loved playing Bingo at the Maine Veterans Home, where she had lived for the past four years. Growing up in a French community, she continued to converse in both English and French throughout her life. The family would like to express gratitude to the medical staff and volunteers of the Maine Veterans Home. In addition to her parents, and husband of 53 years, she is predeceased by four brothers, Raymond, Roger, Lionel, and Florian Dumont; four sisters, Hilda Doyon, Bertha Fortin, Adreinne Gilley, and Delia Lambert. Gilberte is survived by her daughter, Sandra Mansfield and her husband, David, of Bangor; granddaughter, Megan Mansfield and her husband, Chris Grant, of Hampden; step grandson, Kevin Mansfield of Old Town; two step great grandsons, Colin and Ian Mansfield; nineteen nieces and nephews. A special thank you to Lisa Michaud for her friendship and French conversations. Visitation will be held at 11 a.m. on Tuesday, June 26, 2018, followed by a funeral Liturgy outside of Mass at 12 p.m. at Brookings-Smith, 133 Center St., Bangor. Relatives and friends are invited to share conversation and refreshments at the Family Reception Center of Brookings-Smith, 163 Center St., Bangor immediately following the service. The rite of committal will be held 1:00 p.m. Thursday, July 19, 2018, at the Maine Veterans Cemetery, Augusta. In lieu of flowers, gifts may be made to the Maine Veterans Home, 44 Hogan Road, Bangor, Maine 04401. Condolences to the family may be expressed at BrookingsSmith.com.
