Obituary for David E. Smith

David E. Smith
CARMEL - David E. Smith died June 25th at his home in Carmel. Born in Dixmont, December 4, 1935, he was the oldest of four children of Doane G. and Myrtle (Evans) Smith. He attended Dixmont schools and was a 1955 graduate of Carmel High School. Dave was a proud Air Force and Air Guard veteran. Dave first attended aircraft mechanic training in 1954. After US Air Force pilot training in 1956-57, he served as a fighter/interceptor pilot with the Maine Air National Guard in Bangor, flying largely F-101s and, later, KC-135s. In 1979, Lt. Col Smith retired as Flight “A” Commander of the 132nd Air Refueling Wing in 1979, after 25 years with the Guard.
He was married for 61 years to his high school sweetheart, Evie. After briefly driving a taxi and a delivery truck, he worked for over 35 years for the Federal Aviation Administration in Flight Service Centers in Blackstone, VA, Millinocket, and Bangor. Dave was a baseball fan, rooting for the Boston Red Sox and anyone playing the Yankees. He was an avid model railroader, building thousands of HO Scale model railroad engines and cars in meticulous detail, mostly of the Santa Fe railroad, and was an active member of the Eastern Maine Model Railroad Club in Orland. He also loved snowmobiling and attending snowmobile races, especially with his older son Steve. Dave and Evie were University of Maine Women’s Basketball fans, attending many games, home and away. After retirement, they enjoyed traveling to many spots around the globe. He was active in civic life in Carmel, serving as Civil Defense Officer, 15 years as a first responder/ambulance driver, and on the board of the Simpson Memorial Library. He and his wife Evie offered their lawn for youth softball and baseball games and helped create ball fields at Carmel Elementary and later at the Recreation Complex. For many years, you could see him driving his 1964 Triumph Spitfire in town parades. He is survived by his wife Evelyn (Stevens) Smith, son Steven and wife Gail of Orrington, son Tobias of Cape Coral, FL and daughter Dolly and husband Anthony Wilson of Stoneham, MA; three siblings, Darrell and wife Linda of Dixmont, Deane and wife Farleen of Lee, and Della and husband Michael Gleason of Bangor, a granddaughter, Melissa Smith of Orrington, and numerous nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by a daughter, Tracy Jean in 1970. A memorial service with military honors will be held 3pm Thursday, June 28, 2018 at Brookings-Smith, 133 Center Street, Bangor, with the Rev. Garnett Chute, pastor of the Hermon Baptist Church, presiding. The family invites relatives and friends to share conversation and refreshments at the Family Reception Center of Brookings-Smith, 163 Center Street, Bangor, immediately following the service Thursday. Interment will be later at Simpson’s Corner Cemetery, Dixmont.
Those who wish to remember David in a special way may make gifts in his memory to the Simpson Memorial Library, PO Box 186, Carmel, ME 04419. Condolences to the family may be expressed at
