Obituary for Phyllis Maggie Smith (Clark)

Orono - Phyllis C. Smith, 96 died at home on Friday September 14, 2018 with the dignity and grace that she lived throughout her life. She was born in Winterport, May 29, 1922, the daughter of Arthur Bray Clark and Mary Eliza Woodman Clark.
Phyllis attended schools in Winterport and graduated from Winterport High School. Phyllis was married to Clement J. Lane in 1939 and had two sons. She was later divorced and married her late husband Virgil Smith. She worked for many years in the Civil Service at Lackland Air Force Base, Texas, working as a clerk typist while her husband was on active duty with the Air Force. Upon retirement she and her husband moved to Arkansas where they spent many years. Phyllis and Virgil moved back to Maine when he became ill and later passed away. She remained in Orono for the remainder of her life living first with her sister, Ella Parsons and then with her son and daughter-in-law for the past four years.
Phyllis was well known for her excellent home cooking especially making homemade bread. Phyllis enjoyed traveling with her sister, Ella to Florida to visit family and extended visits to Germany to visit her nephew and his wife. Her family was most important to her. She enjoyed family get togethers and visits and hearing about all the family. She never forgot a special occasion or birthday. Phyllis also enjoyed just getting in the car and driving with no place in mind to go, enjoying the beauty Maine had to offer.
In addition to her parents Phyllis was predeceased by her husband, Virgil Smith, three brothers and four sisters.
Surviving are two sons, Irven C. Lane and his wife Gaye of Oxley, AK, Stanley E. Lane and his wife Jean of Orono; four grandchildren, Richard Lane and his significant other Mickey Jones, Cindy Williams all of Flippin, AK., John Lane and Deborah Lane of Orono; five great grandchildren and many nieces and nephews, including a special nephew Richard Parsons of Germany and a special niece Dorraine Plourde who has visited twice a week and tirelessly ran errands for her.
The family extends a heart felt thanks to Beacon Hospice for all their care and support to Phyllis and her family. A special thanks to Janis, Sue Lee and Michelle as her primary care givers. You will always be family.
A graveside service will be held 3 pm. Thursday September 20, 2018 at Riverside Cemetery, Orono. The family invites relatives and friends to share conversation and refreshments at Pat’s Pizza, Orono, following the service. Those who wish to remember Phyllis in a special way may contribute in her memory to the Orono United Methodist Church, 36 Oak St., Orono, ME. 04473.
