William R. Ralph  Congleton, Jr.
HAMPDEN - William R. Congleton, Jr., 71, died surrounded by loved ones July 9, 2018. He was born on June 6, 1947, in Lexington, Kentucky, the son of William Ralph and Thurza Lynn (Darnaby) Congleton. William grew up in Lexington and earned his PhD in Animal Science from the University of Kentucky in 1977. He had many adventures with his wife, Nancy Jean Anderson, including living in Australia and Scotland. Bill and Nancy came to Maine in 1978 when he was offered a professorship at the University of Maine, Orono, where he taught for 35 years. Bill loved the Maine outdoors, and was an avid canoer and kayaker. He was a devoted father and husband and a loyal friend to many. Bill was widowed in 2000. Later in his life he had a loving relationship with Katharine Bates of Dover-Foxcroft and was close with her family. In addition to his parents, William was predeceased by his wife, Nancy, as well a sister-in-law, Susan Congleton, and a brother-in-law, Bruce Anderson. He is survived by his daughters, Johanna and Christina Congleton and their husbands, his brother, Jim Congleton, and a sister-in-law, Dodie Anderson, as well as his nieces and nephews and their children. The family wishes to thank the staff of the ICU at Eastern Maine Medical Center for their wonderful care and service. A memorial service will be held at 1 p.m. on Saturday, August 4, 2018, at the Hampden-Gilpatrick Chapel, 45 Western Avenue, Hampden. Relatives and friends are welcome to call from 12 p.m. until the time of the service. Interment will be in Lakeview Cemetery, Hampden. Bill was an animal lover, and donations can be made in his honor to the Bangor Humane Society, 693 Mt. Hope Avenue, Bangor, ME 04401.
