Gainesville, VA Arthur Russell McAlister, 88, of Gainesville, VA, formerly of York, PA, died at The Tribute at Heritage Village in Gainesville on July 21, 2018. He was the husband of the late Muriel B. (Bennett) McAlister.
Born January 6, 1930 in West Paris, Maine, he was the son of the late Chester R. and Helen O. (Libby) McAlister.
Art served during the Korean War as a 1st Lieutenant in the U.S. Army. He was the co-founder with Dale Anderson of York Ag Products, Inc. Art was a 1948 graduate of Deering High School in Portland, Maine, and a 1952 graduate of the University of Maine. He was a member of Eastminster Presbyterian Church in York, a member of the Whistle Pig Fishing Club, a past member of the Springettsbury Township Planning Commission and past chairman of the PACA Aglime Committee. He also served as President of the York Chapter of the Sales and Marketing Executive Association, a Vice President of the York County Planning Commission, and was former president of PennAg Industries Association. Art is survived by three sons, David A. McAlister and his wife, Liz, of Westfield, NJ, Gary B. McAlister and his wife, Susan, of Franklin, MA, and William S. McAlister and his wife, Judi, of Chantilly, VA; six grandsons, Daniel and his wife, Robyn, Kevin, Bryan, Jesse, Scott, and Nick; as well as a granddaughter, Morgan; and a sister, Agnes Crooke of Westbrook, ME. He was preceded in death by his sister, Barbara Kennedy, and his brother, Herbert. A graveside service will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Saturday, August 25, 2018, at the Riverside Cemetery, 170 Bennoch Road, Orono, with the Rev. Lorna Grenfell, Pastor of the Church of Universal Fellowship, Orono, officiating. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to PennAg Scholarship Fund, 2215 Forest Hills Drive #39, Harrisburg, PA 17112.
