BRIDGEWATER & BANGOR - Edna M. (Tidd) Smith, 91, died September 10, 2018, following a lengthy illness at a Bangor healthcare facility. She was born September 11, 1926 in Bridgewater, to Olin and Mae (Collins) Tidd.

Edna graduated from Bridgewater Classical Academy with the Class of ‘44. Shortly thereafter she married Attle M. Smith and settled into the life she loved as they raised their family on their Mars Hill potato farm. The farmhouse kitchen was an open and welcoming place, full of the aroma of freshly baked bread. Edna enjoyed cooking and the more who arrived to crowd the table the better she liked it. She was renowned for her skills as anyone who sampled her freshly baked chicken pot pie and cinnamon rolls would attest. Following the sale of the farm Edna turned to her incredible talents as a cook and seamstress. In retirement she enjoyed continuing to help people as she served her community as a Senior Companion through the University’s Cooperative Extension. And of course she looked forward to every opportunity to prepare meals and desserts, as she did often for the Anah Shrine Funsters Unit and the Bridgewater Volunteer Firefighters.

Edna was predeceased by her parents and her beloved sister, Katherine T. Button as well as her half-sister, Marion Nelson and brothers, Vaughn and Harvey Burlock. She is survived by her sons, Dennison A. Smith and his wife, Marjorie of Hampden; Harold W. Smith of Mars Hill; daughter, Carletta M. Bassano and her husband, Louis of Ellsworth; her grandchildren, Attle Smith and Jessica Gal; great grandchildren and many nieces and nephews.

Edna touched many lives with her joyful, positive outlook. Relatives and friends are invited to celebrate her life at a memorial gathering, 1-4 p.m., Sunday, September 23, 2018, at the Anah Shrine Center, 1404 Broadway, Bangor. In lieu of flowers those wishing to honor her memory may donate to Westgate Center’s activities program to benefit her fellow residents. Please send contributions payable to Westgate Resident Counsel, attention Cheryl Massey, Westgate Center, 750 Union Street, Bangor, ME 04401.
