Obituary for Walter George Whitney

HAMPDEN – Walter George Whitney, 81, passed away at his home September 12, 2018. He was born July 8, 1937, in Bangor, the son of Walter E. and Orasie L. (Lapointe) Whitney. Walter graduated from Hampden Academy, class of 1955. He owned and operated Hampden Window, serving Hampden and the surrounding communities for over 50 years. Walter followed the local high school and college sporting teams. He especially enjoyed following the Husson Braves. Walter also liked slow pitch softball, both as a player and umpire. He enjoyed snowmobiling in the winter and camping in the summer with his family. Walter also enjoyed working in his flower garden. In addition to his parents, Walter was predeceased by a son, Daryl Whitney; a brother, Lester Whitney, and a sister, Louise Keene. He is survived by his wife of almost 60 years, Patricia Whitney; children, Brent L. Whitney and wife, Diane of Ellsworth, Cheryl Worcester and husband, Cliff of Dedham, Stacey Burnett and husband, Scott of Hermon; 9 grandchildren, Josh, Daniel, Cassandra, Brooke, Meghan, Brianne, Catrina, Paige, and Walter; 5 great-grandchildren, Jaden, Jhace, Josh, Khloe, and Dominic; a twin brother, Marcelle Whitney and wife, Winifred of Bar Harbor; siblings, Aline Patterson and husband, Hal of Illinois, Daniel Whitney of Bangor; a sister-in-law, Phyllis Whitney; and many nieces and nephews. Relatives and friends are welcome to call 5-7 p.m., Monday, September 17, 2018, at the Hampden-Gilpatrick Chapel of Brooking-Smith, 45 Western Avenue, Hampden. A graveside service will be held 2 p.m., Tuesday, September 18, 2018, at Lakeview Cemetery, Western Avenue, Hampden. All are welcome to share conversation and refreshments at the Hampden Snowmobile Club, 844 Western Avenue, Hampden, ME 04444, immediately following the service, Tuesday. In lieu of flowers, those who wish to remember Walter in a special way may make gifts in his memory to the Samuel Alexander Memorial Endowment, or to the Lafayette Family Cancer Center.
