Condolence: We are really saddened by the loss of Tom — as warm and down-to-earth a person as we have ever known. Mark, you and your Dad & Becky were always so much fun to be around, & we thoroughly enjoyed our experiences with you and your family over the years. We seemed to be on the same page with Tom’s political friends, too! Generations of Walsh progeny will hear stories about Tom and be happy and grateful that he lived such a vibrant, successful life in every way, and made life better for everyone. Our condolences to you, Mara & Donny

Condolence: Mark and the entire Walsh Family, We are so sorry for your loss. Although we were not fortunate enough to meet Thomas, we know he must of been an inspiring father and business man to have raised sons like Mark and Billy. The pleasure you seem to find in your work and patience when working with us here at Longboat Key, were surely attributes he maintained and instilled in you. We thank him for that. Condolence: Mark, Billy, Mike and family, I am sorry to hear of the passing of your father. Not only did he build a great business, he did it with a fabulous family. The care and concern that you demonstrate to your parents and each other is so obviously genuine and heartfelt. Not every family business can make this happen. It is testimony to having great parents and the foundation of all of your successes. Jane and my thoughts are with you as you grief the passing of a grand man. Mark

Condolence From: Bobby Wollenberg and Cathy Sauer
Condolence: It was heartbreaking news to learn of Mr. Walsh’s passing. We feel so fortunate to have known him. The Walsh’s are like family to us as we are long-time tenants of Ocean Properties, working right next door to their corporate offices in Florida. A family business ourselves, it was clear both Mr. Walsh and our father were cut of the same cloth – strong work ethic, dedicated to their business, who look tough on the outside but are all heart on the inside. Our father’s business relationship with the family stems from a handshake because that was enough. Our father recognized in Mr. Walsh a similar outlook on business. They knew it takes more than intelligence and strength and creativity, it takes character. It is a generation the likes of which we sadly won’t again see. We know how proud Mr. Walsh was of his family and what they’ve accomplished with their family business. It was inspiring to see him walk through the parking lot, focused on a thought, heading for the office even though he could have been relaxing anywhere in the world. And it was touching toward the end to see him assisted by his sons as he still came into work. We too lost our father not long ago and the pain remains raw. There is comfort however in seeing him everywhere around us with the legacy he built here and I know the Walsh family will feel the same with their Dad. While we will miss seeing Mr. Walsh coming through the parking lot, we will now see him and our father out there together having a chat, and then coming into work. We will be forever grateful for his kindness and generosity. With heartfelt sympathy, Bobby and Cathy

Condolence From: John Nicolai
Condolence: To the Walsh family and friends of Mr. Walsh from Captain John and Coreen Nicolai, It’s with sadness that I learned of the passing of Mr. Walsh on Saturday night after doing a lecture at the Regency in Bar Harbor. I always addressed Tom Walsh as Mr. Walsh even though one day at the Harborside dock he said John “it’s Tom”. I told Mr. Walsh that I appreciated his offer, but being raised in an old fashion European family I don’t think I can do it. Mr. Walsh had qualities that few people possess and I’m not thinking of his exceptional business acumen, I’m relating to his generosity, honesty, acute dedication to his family, his appreciation of competent hard working employees and management. His concern and appreciation for people surrounding him in everyday life was unique. His ability to remember people’s names and always finding the time to acknowledge them and say a kind word was a tribute to his humanity. Every spring Mr. Walsh would come down to the Harborside dock and stop to see me on my tour boat “Lulu” to ask me how I was doing and did I make money the previous season. My answer was standard: “I can’t complain” and “I had a great season” which always put a big smile on his face and mine too. When Mr. Walsh bought 1 West Street with all the tour boats, I thought my days would be over running the Lulu from the Harborside Hotel docks. Among those boats was a new lobster tour boat the “Miss Samantha” that did the same style of tours I did. I expected Eben Salvatore (Mr. Walsh’s inseparable apprentice) to come down to the dock any day to give me the inevitable news that I had been replaced by their newly acquired boat. Instead, Mr. Walsh came down himself and as usual with a smile said hello and asked me “if I was happy working at the Harborside dock” to which I replied, “yes sir I am” to which he answered “ John as long as you’re happy here, you’re welcome to stay as long as you want”. On a simple handshake, that relationship lasted for 16 years until I sold the Lulu and my business to the present owners. I’m now semi-retired and I will never forget Mr. Walsh’s kindness and his rock solid character. To his beloved wife and family (I kinda have a soft spot for his son Mike) and his trusted entourage (I’m thinking of Eben especially) please accept Coreen’s and my most sincere condolences for the loss of a true gentleman and family man. Tom, thanks for all you’ve done for my family. Respectfully, Captain John Nicolai

Condolence From: Tracey Whitten
Condolence: As an 18 year old homeless kid, Tommy’s company took me in, gave me a home and a job. I studied him. I admired him. I decided I wanted to be like him and some day own hotels. I think the obit might be wrong in that I think his first hotel was the University Motor Inn in 1963 that he built with Larry Mahaney. When I decided to buy my first one, it was for sale. Despite the delapitated state it was in, I felt it was a sign. It was Tommy’s start, so it would be mine. I bought that hotel and let Tom’s spirit guide me, although he never really knew my story. His passing saddens me dearly as he had a profound impact on my life, totally unknown to him. Rest well Tommy Walsh. Thanks for your vision and passion.

Condolence From: John ( Moppsy ) Davis
Condolence: To all of Tom's family: Please accept my most sincere condolences. Tom was a wonderful friend to me although I have not seen him in many years. From enjoying his company with Orman Twitchell to accepting favors he bestowed upon me and never asking for anything in return. He offered a Bar Harbor room as a wedding gift for my daughter and then sent up a fruit basket. He was always there with an offer. If you were from Maine, he enjoyed helping. Just a wonderful man. I will always respect the man and remember his legend. RIP, Tom
