HAMPDEN - Ernest “Steve” Eyles Jr, 67, of Hampden died peacefully surrounded by his family on Oct. 10th, 2018. He was born June 28th, 1951, in Fitchburg MA, the son of Ernest S. Eyles Sr., and Helen (Haughey) Robillard.

Steve grew up in Bangor and Lincoln where he graduated from Mattanawook Academy in 1970. He married Alice Godfrey of Bangor, in 1971, and raised his family in Newburgh where he served as a town selectman for a few years. Throughout his life, he was an avid outdoorsman holding a Registered Maine Guide license. Steve spent every summer at his cottage on Cold Stream Pond in Enfield. He enjoyed fishing with his grandkids, always coming home with a big catch and never ending fish stories. Additionally, he enjoyed hunting, camping and hiking including several hikes up Mt. Kahtadin and a climb up Mt. Washington. He loved canoeing and taking Allagash trips. He was a partcipant in the first annual Kenduskeag Canoe Race in1967. In the winter months, Steve enjoyed snowmobiling and ice fishing. He was a member of the Goodwill Riders Snowmobile Club in Hampden, where he was the trail master for several years. He assisted boy scouts in obtaining the rank of Eagle by helping them build snowmobile trails. In his professional life Steve worked at Eastern Fine paper for 23 years before establishing and becoming a partner in Penta Tech Coated Products in 1998 which is a manufacturer of silicone release liners servicing the pressure sensitive adhesives industry.

Steve is survived by his wife of 47 years, Alice Godfrey of Hampden, his 3 children, Amy Eyles-Kunstman and husband, Mark, of Bangor, Benson Eyles and wife, Jessica of Hampden, and Molly Cyr and husband, Craig of Hampden; 6 grandchildren, Sierra Gagnon, Denali and Kobe Eyles, Meghan, Hunter and Oliver Cyr;brothers, William Eyles and wife, Beth of Chester, ME, Douglas Eyles of Windham, ME and Jonathan Eyles and wife, Dorian of Watertown, NY and several nieces and nephews. In addition to his parents, Steve was predeceased by his brother-in-law, Donald Godfrey, of Yarmouth, ME. Steve will be remembered as a man of strong character. He was unconditionally devoted to his family and will be greatly missed.

A memorial service will be held 1 pm Wednesday, October 17, 2018 at All Souls Congregational Church, 10 Broadway, Bangor, with the Rev. Chad L. Poland, Pastor and Teacher and the Rev. Renee U. Garrett, M.Div., Minister of Christian Nurture, officiating. The family invites relatives and friends to share conversation and refreshments in the church vestry immediately following Wednesday.
