Clyde “Sonny” G. Berry, 71, died May 5, 2018 in Bangor, Maine. He was born in Glenburn, Maine, December 28, 1946 the youngest son of Clyde Labon and Pearl Sarah (Drew) Berry.
He attended Glenburn schools, Bangor High School and graduated from Higgins Classical Institute in Charleston. He attended Husson College and the University of Maine. He worked for several banks before his retirement.
He served one term on the Glenburn School Board and served many years on the Glenburn Cemetery Committee. He was co-chairman of the Glenburn Sesquicentennial Celebration in 1972 and co-authored the history of the town of Glenburn “The Story of a Town, Glenburn, Maine, 1822-1972” with Naida Gallant.
He also served as a Trustee of the Hartford, VT, Village Library and was a Lister for the town of Hartford, Vermont.
He joined Pleiades Grange of Glenburn in 1961 and was Master for several years. He was at the time of his passing a member of Mt. Phillip Grange of Rome, Maine and has held offices there as well. He served one term as Master of Penobscot Pomona #8, and is presently a member of Lincoln Pomona and formerly a member of Sagadahoc Pomona, where he has held various offices. In Vermont, he was a charter member and Past Master of Upper Valley Community Grange and a charter member and First master of Heart of Vermont Pomona.
He served on the Maine State Grange Youth Committee and was elected Lecturer of the Maine State Grange in 1981 and served until his election as Overseer in 1987. He was elected Master of the Maine State Grange in 1989 and served until 1997 he was elected Chaplain of the Maine State Grange in 2011 and was elected Assistant Steward of the Maine State Grange in 2015. He also served as Overseer and Master of the Vermont State Grange.
He was a life member of the Northeast Lecturers Association.
He was member of the National Grange and a voting member of the Assembly of Demeter of the National Grange. He was elected Steward of the National Grange in 1991 and Lecturer of the National Grange in 1997. He was employed by the National Grange as the Program Resource Director for several years.
During his terms as Maine State Grange Master he served as a member of the Board of Directors of the Maine Highway Users Federation, board member of Eastern States Exposition and New England Grange Building in West Springfield, Mass.
An avid genealogist, he was a life member of the Maine Genealogical Society and has served as Treasurer. He was a member and President of the Taconnett Falls Chapter of MGS and past President of the Penobscot Chapter of MGS. He was a life member of the Maine Old cemetery Association, Past President, and recently a member of Board of Directors.
He was a member of the New England Historical and Genealogical Society. He served as President of the Somerville Historical Society of Somerville, Maine and was involved with the publishing of the History of Patricktown, Sommerville, Maine. He had been a member of the St. Andrew’s Society of Maine, He had also had belonged to the Colson, Reynolds, McKusick and Hubbard family associations.
He is a member and Commander of the Garfield Camp #1, Sons of Union Veterans of the Civil War, Waterville, Maine, and served as Secretary/Treasurer of the Maine Department of SUVCW. While living in Vermont the was a member of McKinley Camp, SUVCW of Lebanon, NH. He was past board chairman of the Hartford [Vt] Historical Society. He is a member of Sons of the American Revolution being descended from Sargent Shaw of Standish, Maine, and serves as President of the Maine Society, SAR.
He is survived by one brother Charles R. Berry of Glenburn; an aunt, Marlene D. Farren of Bangor; cousins, Merrill Megquier, Sherwood Megquier, Dodie Cullicutt Parkman, Jean, Jennifer, and Philip Megquier, Timothy Farren, and Terry Farren; many special friends, including Dorothy Brown of Oakland and Roberta Meserve of Raymond.
Funeral services will be held at 2 PM, Thurs, May 10, at Brookings-Smith, 133 Center Street, Bangor. Friends are invited to visit with the family 1 PM until time of service. Interment will follow at Lakeview Cemetery, Glenburn. Gifts in his memory may be made to the Taconnett Falls Genealogical Society, 10 Lithgow St., Winslow, ME. 04901.
