BIRGITTA ANN-MARIE CATTELLE

ELLSWORTH- Birgitta Ann-Marie (Rystrand) Cattelle, 75, passed away peacefully, after an ongoing 18 year battle with cancer, surrounded by family members on March 31, 2019 at Northern Light Maine Coast Hospital. She was born June 25, 1943 in Goteborg, Sweden. She was the youngest daughter of Rolf Tage and Ester Matilda (Sjoberg) Rystrand. Birgitta (Gittan) grew up in Goteborg, Sweden. In her early twenties, she moved to New York working for a Swedish shipping company. Shortly afterwards she became a stewardess for ONA Airline. In February of 1971 she was introduced to Bill Cattelle. After a whirlwind romance they were married in August of that year and settled in Hampden, Maine. Over the next six years they had three children- Kristina, Amy and Erik. Gittan was a stay at home mother for fourteen years. She also became a second mother to her niece and nephews during their years as exchange students here in America. In 1988 Gittan enrolled at the University of Maine where she graduated at the top of her class with a degree in education. She taught at Ellsworth Middle School for four years. Gittan and Bill then became educators overseas, working in Kuwait, Bahrain, Bulgaria and Bolivia. She then retired and devoted her time to her grandchildren where you could see her at numerous sporting events. Birgitta was predeceased by her parents. Surviving in addition to her husband of 47 years, William Updyke Cattelle, are her daughters Kristina Dumond and her husband Michael of Old Town; Amy Nutter and her husband Gordon of Holden; her son Erik Cattelle of Tampa, Florida; grandchildren, Jacob Munroe, Andrew Munroe, James Dumond, Karina Dumond, Kaleb Nutter; one sister Berit Staffas and her husband Lars Erik of Molnlycke, Sweden; One brother Ralph Rystrand and his wife Marianne of Olofstorp, Sweden; and many loving nieces, nephews and in-laws. My sincerist condolences to Bill, Christina, Amy and Erik. Gitta fought a hard long valiant fight against cancer. Her determination to live with her limitations was most commendable. The love for her cherished extended family, numerous friends, books, art and theater sustained her throughout. She will be missed greatly. Unfortunately, I am returning to Maine in May and will miss Gitta's memorial service. Warmest regards, Phyllis Leeman

Dear Bill and Family, While we know words offer small comfort in your time of sorrow, we do want you to know that you and your family have our sincere sympathy on the loss of your beloved wife and mother. A couple couple of summers ago we saw Birgitta in Jonesport. We were sitting on a bench by the harbor and she came over and chatted with us for a short time. Very friendly as usual, enjoyed our chat. If there is anything that we can do to help, please don't hesitate to call on us. With Deepest Sympathy, Kendall and Bette Winchenbach

Sending my most heartfelt condolences to your family. I'll always remember Gittan for her true kindness and loving spirit, felt especially at Christmas time when she hosted friends and family for an amazing swedish celebration with Tomte. May cherished memories bring you comfort at this time. With love, Jacqueline (Cole) Spathakis

Our deepest sympathy goes out to you, Bill, and your family with the passing of Gittan. We have such fond memories of our times together with the two of you. Fish House Punch, snowmobiling and devouring lobsters all come to mind. When our German Shorthair Pointer had her litter, Gittan wanted a call so she could come to watch and help. For whatever reason, Gittan and I were in charge of decorating for a dance at the base. It was spring and we wanted a "live" tree. I knew if she came with me, my father in law would get us our tree. He never could say no to a beautiful woman especially one with an accent! Losing a loved one at any age is very difficult, but I know your love for one another and fond memories will get you through! Love to all, Wes and Lin Hallowell
