Obituary

WINTERPORT - Saturday, October 12, 2019 was a breezy, misty autumn day when our beloved mother, Ruth Anne (Brown) Moran, decided it was time to depart her earthly life and family, and seek her next adventure in heaven reuniting with family that was calling her home. Mom was born on September 10, 1930, in Pembroke, Maine to Margaret (Henderson) and Thomas Brown. She spent most of her childhood in Bangor but eventually settled along the Penobscot River in Winterport where she met, was swept away by, and married a handsome, young serviceman, George (Hippo) Moran, who had just returned from the European Theater in WWII. Mom was not a huge traveler, however, she lived a full adventurous life in Paddy Hollow with our Dad and their five rambunctious kids. Mom would always speak her mind and never beat around the bush. We kids could never get away with anything, no matter how hard we tried. Throughout her 89 years she enjoyed: following Winterport Little League, Bangor Comrades Legion baseball, and Brewer High School baseball, track, and football; knitting, crocheting, quilting; gardening and birdwatching; canning, making pickles, jams/jellies; playing the piano and organ; spending time at Swan Lake in the summer; playing cards, board games and doing puzzles; cheering on NASCAR, the Red Sox and Patriots; writing a local news column for The Republican Journal; working as a cook at the Smith School for 27 years; following family and friends on Facebook; sending cards to children, grandchildren, and great-grands - her calendar looked like something right from Mission Control! She enjoyed music, particularly Dorsey, Miller, Sinatra, and Elvis and boy could she ‘cut a rug’! She enjoyed a glass of good cold beer occasionally while dining out. Mom was predeceased by her husband, George, Sr., her parents, her sons-in-law John Johnson and Ron Darling and a special aunt, Betty Whittaker. She leaves behind her five children - Dianna Darling of Newburgh, George Moran, Jr, and wife, Cindy of Winterport, Mark Moran and wife, Tina of Folsom, CA, Melissa Stearns and husband, Paul of Guilford, and Stephanie Perkins and husband, Tom of Orono. She also leaves behind eleven well-loved grandchildren Quint, Crescent, Ben, Josh, Amanda, Galen, Amy, Sara, Ben, Emily, and Abbie and their respective spouses along with 22 precious great-grandchildren, her steadfast companion, Sweetie, sister Carolyn West, sister-in-law Maryanna Moran, special neighbors Butch and Jeannie Canty, and many wonderful nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends. Mom always said, “Never carry a grudge, it will get you nowhere” and “Family is important so stick together.” The Moran Family would like to thank the nurses and doctors at St. Joseph’s Hospital, Bangor for their attentive and kind care. In memory of Mom: plant something, hug someone, help someone, love someone, be kind to everyone. A Celebration of Life will be held at the Hampden-Gilpatrick Chapel of Brookings-Smith, 45 Western Avenue, Hampden, on Sunday, November 10, 2019 from 1-3 p.m. Condolences to the family may be expressed at BrookingsSmith.com
