Obituary

Patricia Joan (Kelbel) Ryan, 88, passed away peacefully on October 13, 2020, surrounded by her loving family. She was born December 1, 1931, the daughter of John and Patricia Kelbel in Petoskey, Michigan. Pat graduated from Petoskey High School and moved to Maine in her early twenties. She had a 30 year career with the Maine Department of Transportation, retiring as office manager. In her early years, she was an accomplished figure skater, skier and enjoyed the outdoors. In later years, Pat enjoyed playing golf, swimming and cross country skiing. She was an active member of St Teresa’s Church in South Brewer, volunteering in a number of different roles. Those included the sodality, usher/greeter, Altar Guild, funeral receptions and the annual Christmas fair. Pat enjoyed summers at Beech Hill Pond with her friends and family. She was a wonderful cook and baker, often sharing goodies with neighbors and the parish. Mom was as selfless as they come, and always thinking of others; she loved, adored, and was very proud of her children, grandchildren and great granddaughter. She is survived by two children and their families; Cathryn and her husband Kenneth Hanscom and their son Ryan and his partner Jessica Dumont, all of Orono, Robert Ryan and his wife Pamela of Millis, MA, and their children Caitlin and her husband John Kent of Norfolk MA, Bobby Ryan of Price Valley, Idaho and great granddaughter Elizabeth Kent. Pat is also survived by brothers John Kelbel Jr and his wife Rose, of Grand Rapids, Michigan and brother William Kelbel and wife Margaret of Grand Rapids, Michigan and many nieces and nephews. The family would like to thank the wonderful staff at Westgate Center for Rehabilitation and Alzheimer’s Care for their loving, professional and compassionate care given to our mom. A Funeral Mass will be 11:00 AM, Friday, October 16, at St. Paul the Apostle Parish, St Teresa’s Catholic Church, 425 South Main Street, Brewer, followed by a private burial. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to St Teresa’s Catholic Church, 425 South Main Street Brewer, Maine 04412 or to the Westgate Center for Rehabilitation and Alzheimer’s Care 750 Union Street, Bangor, Maine 04401. Please be mindful of others by practicing social distancing, wearing a face covering, and staff will be conducting contact tracing. Condolences to the family may be expressed at BrookingsSmith.com.

I am sorry to hear of Pat's passing, I worked with Pat for a number of years before she retired from MDOT and enjoyed working with her and talking with her about work and her family. Pat was a very special lady and I will remember her fondly. She enjoyed cooking fudge for the employees almost as much as they enjoyed eating it. My son was born on Pat's birthday and she always remember that.
Rest in peace Pat.

Pat will be held close in Bruce and my hearts! Father God of love and mercy, embrace all those whose hearts today overflow with grief and such a sense of loss at Pat's passing. You hold time within Your hands, and see it all, from beginning to end. Please keep and carry these precious people in their sadness and loss. Grant them space to express their tears. Hold them close through the coming days. Keep them safe as they gather together. I ask in the precious name of Jesus. Amen
