Ada Muriel (Martin) Cutliffe, 84, beloved mother and grandmother, died peacefully on March 11, 2015 after suffering an inoperable brain aneurysm rupture and stroke on February 1st. She was born on January 21, 1931 at home, the seventh child of Sterling V. Martin and Edith (Sawler) Martin. She graduated from Brownville Jct. High School on June 3, 1948 and on New Year’s Eve that same year she married her beloved husband Harry Cutliffe, Jr. at St. John’s Episcopal Church in Brownville Jct. She and Harry were married 57 years until his death in 2006. Together they had three children whom they raised in Kenduskeag. Several years after Harry’s death, Ada sold their home and moved to an independent living retirement community in Bangor, remaining active with her many friends until suffering a stroke. She was a member of the Mystic Tie Grange No. 58 in Kenduskeag and the First United Methodist Church, 40 South Main St., Brewer.
She was a very independent woman with a quick wit who adored her little dog Cubby, loved engaging in political conversations and always shared her opinion of the world’s current situation and events.
Ada retired from GTE Sylvania in 1991 after 24 years of employment. In Nov. 1994 she went back to work part-time. She spent the next 6 years at the Bangor Daily News raising money for the “Newspapers in Education” program for the local schools.
She is survived by her three cherished children, Larry Cutliffe, Sr. of Hawthorne, Florida, Linda L. Cutliffe Hatch and husband William of Brewer, and Barbara A. Cutliffe Gray and husband Keith of Akhiok, Alaska and Newport, one brother, Thomas Martin of Howland, nine grandchildren, 14 great-grandchildren, several nieces and nephews.
Ada was predeceased by her mother and father; brothers, Sterling Martin, Howard Martin, John Martin, sisters; Kathleen Buzza, Gertrude Weston, Mary Weston, Rita Boobar and Lucy Strout.
Honoring Ada’s wishes, a graveside service will be held in the spring at the Kenduskeag Village cemetery, Kenduskeag at a date and time to be announced with Rev. Harbour Mitchell III, pastor of the First United Methodist Church in Brewer, officiating. Those who wish to remember Ada in a special way may make gifts in her memory to the First United Methodist Church, 40 South Main Street, Brewer, ME 04412.
