Alan “Al” Rawley was born on January 11, 1963 at a Bangor Hospital. It was at that same hospital where he passed away on March 24, 2024. He has now joined his parents and brother in heaven where we’re told they are fishing together.
Alan spent his early years living with his parents, Elton and Aileen Rawley, in Marlboro, Maine. When they moved to Bangor, he found an expansion of the support he had known in the Ellsworth area and in its schools. There was Penobscot Valley Industries and Ralph Leek Elders Amicus program to give Alan activities and friendship to fill his days and provide for his health and safety for 40 years.
After his mother’s death, he relied on MERT Enterprises to provide housing. Since 1998, he has known many housemates and care givers with whom he has shared his life. We will forever be grateful for the care and support he was given throughout the years. Swimming in Hampden and bowling in Bangor were particular favorite activities. He delighted in visits to Pine Tree Camp where his parents campaigned for its support with annual television programs. Getaways to Camp CaPella allowed him two days of camping activities with all of his friends.
In addition to his parents, Alan was predeceased by his brother, Russ Van Arsdale. He is survived by his sister-in-law, M. Jane Van Arsdale.
Friends are welcome to call from 10 to 11 AM on Friday, April 12, 2024 at the Brewer Chapel of Brookings Smith, 55 South Main Street. A Celebration of Life will be held immediately after with Dr. Bruce Young officiating.
In honor of Alan Rawley, a longtime resident of MERT Enterprises, his family has committed to fund the yearly tuition for his friends to attend one two-day session at Camp CaPella, a non-profit camp for our disabled public, in Dedham, ME. The donation will be put in a fund to be invested and utilized, exclusively for Alan’s extended family at MERT. Jane Van Arsdale has made this commitment to Camp CaPella for MERT due to the wonderful care Mary Rush and staff provided her family member since 1998. Gifts in Alan’s memory may be made to Camp CaPella,P.O. Box 552, Holden, ME. 04429, knowing that Alan will be there in spirit.
