Alfred Wendell “Woody” Woodard, 84, passed away at his home on Sunday, January 11, 2015, after a long illness. He was born on April 15, 1930, the son of Harold Woodard, Sr., and Ruth (Steen) Woodard. Alfred was predeceased by his wife of 63 years, Marilyn (Thompson) Woodard who passed away on June 23, 2013. He was also predeceased by his mother, Ruth (Steen) Woodard in 1933 and his infant son, Thomas, in 1952. Following a difficult childhood and upbringing, Alfred graduated from Hermon High School in 1948 and enlisted in the United States Navy where he would devote nine years of his life serving on several submarines, including the Sea Leopard and the Albacore. On November 9, 1949, Alfred married the love of his life, Marilyn Ella Thompson, and together they shared 63 years during which they lived a rich and fulfilling life, raising four children and later being blessed with seven grandchildren and several great-grandchildren.
Following Alfred’s time in the United States Navy, he returned to Maine and worked at Bomarc Missile as well as several other places of employment , often working two jobs at a time in order to support his family, until being employed by the FAA where he would be the chief supervisor for the lighting system at BIA and other airports in the New England area for the next 25 years, retiring in 1985. Following retirement, he and wife, Marilyn, would enjoy many, many years of living in their retirement home on the Horseback Road in Carmel. Together, Alfred and Marilyn traveled to a variety of places, enjoyed their pool, gardened and lovingly worked on their special little home. Alfred was gifted in many areas. He was an expert mechanic, electrician, plumber and carpenter. In his prime, there was nothing mechanical or in woodworking that he could not take apart, put back together or create himself. In his earlier years, Alfred was often called upon by others for help with a myriad of mechanical, electrical, plumbing and carpentry issues, and he never failed to be there for others, and to do his best. Alfred was most proud of his time in the navy serving on submarines and spoke often of these times. On June 12, 2012, he was given the tremendous gift by the US Albacore Museum in Portsmouth, New Hampshire, with a day named solely in his honor as a proud member of one of the original sailors on this very special and famous submarine. Alfred loved and excelled at all things outdoors and was a farmer at heart. He was an avid and excellent gardener, growing massive vegetable gardens and creating beautiful floral landscapes. He also had a natural love, innate instinct and kindness toward animals, understanding their ways, whether farm animals, horses, dogs, cats or pet birds. Little is known of Alfred’s remaining family from childhood and specific names of family are also largely unknown. Alfred is survived by daughter, Cheryl Woodard Fontaine, and husband, Louis Fontaine of Sidney; son, David W. Woodard, and wife, Cecille, of Clinton; son, Stephen A. Woodard of Hampden; and daughter, Rebecca Woodard-Inman, and husband, Richard F. Inman, of Hermon; grandsons Jason Woodard, Michael Woodard, Joseph Woodard, Justin Woodard, Joshua Woodard, and a granddaughter, Michelle Fontaine. Alfred is also survived by his grandson, Adam Woodard, with whom he shared a very special relationship and who helped to care for him during the latter part and final days of his life; his half-brother, Harold “Junior” Woodard, and wife, Chrystel, of Milo. Alfred may be survived by his one full sibling, Pauline (Woodard) Humphrey, but this is unknown as they were separated from a very early age and had little contact over the years. On his wife, Marilyn’s, side of the family, Alfred is survived by his sister-in-law, Marguerite Haskell of Carmel; sister-in-law, Marie Reed, and husband, Pastor Gilbert Reed of Carmel; several nieces and nephews. The family would like to thank the very special people who provided loving care to Alfred during the final weeks and days of his life. These include the wonderful staff of Hospice of Eastern Maine, Dr. Charles Burger and staff of Martin’s Point, Eastern Home Health Care and, most especially, Ruth Burrill of EHHC, Alfred’s devoted and caring personal care attendant.

A graveside memorial service with full military honors, will be held 2:00pm Saturday, May 16, 2015 at the North Carmel Cemetery on the Horseback Road in Carmel, with Pastor Tim Curtis, officiating.
